ing from the Columbia It tes

"Some days ago there ap
peared in. the press dispatches
a statement that the fertilizer
manufacturers of Virginia, and
the Carolinas had entered into
Combination whereby the prin
cipal work should be operated
under ouo management.
Promptly the News and Cou
rier, in its local columns, came
out with a denial that any ol
"the Charleston concerns were
in the combination. That was
a fact so far as it went but it
didn't go far enough.

large number all over the State,
I will have to submit to the ex
tortion that will almost certain

that the (Columbia companies
are not. in the Charleston trust
or any other, which is one
bright lining to the otherwise
d.ird cloud. The connimt rs in
this territory will not suffer if
this is true for a while yet any
way, and it is hoped for the
sake of the farmers that the
factories here will not foi in a
trust of Jheir <wn Or enter in
e ose relations with an> o'hur.
Owing to the railroad rates
the Columbia companies have
been shut out heretofore from
legitimate territory, but the
Railro.id Commission will soon
announce some rates, which
'will enable Columbia to com
pete with Charleston in the
upper poition of the State, not
ably along the line of the Port
Royal ami Western Carolina
Railroad, where she could not
do business heretofore. The
