it has ever been the pleasure of the
writer to see ir. print. No man af
ter reading that effort will dare to
accuse Mr. Carlisle of insincerity.
'1 he man is beyond doubt honest
to the core and beli<m.*s implicitly
that every word he uttered at Cov
ington is as true as holy writ.
Unfortunately however for the
-ten ability of his arguments, Un
distinguished speaker is color-blind,
everything appertaining to the sub
ject of finance assuming in color to
me defective vision a rich, golden
yellow. In fact on this subject of
finance, Mr. Carlisle reminds mo of
\he eld citizen who remarked yes
terday that lie hrd never seen such
weather in May, when the fact is
thaton May 16th of list year ue
had a very damaging frost. 5>o
when in the opening paragraph of
hi* address proper, he states that
the depreciation of prices and fi
nancial depression J began five
years ago and not twenty } ears as
kated, the facts most positively re
fute his statement, as any wage
earner, producer or moi l gage-rid
den farmer can abundautly testify.
Equally ms fallacious in the as
sertion that' the crisis \^s precipi
tated by l lie experiment by the Ar
gentine Republic cf a cheap and in
flated currency. The idea is pre
posterous that a little South Amer
ican Republic could even remotely
unsettle values and ehake the finan
cial system of a universe when ev
ery financier. of note predicted
years previous to its actual occu
rence the collapse of the Argentine
system of finance.

this exposition of gold-bug heresies
After devoting about a half col
umn to abuse of the Harrison ad
ministration and laying at its door

establishing a new unit and meas
ure of value unless the change
could bu positively shown before
hand to be beneficial. ?
Now, why didn't Mr Caihsle
toll the people that the true unit
aiid measure of value is even now
the samc*as has prevailed since tnc
passage of our first coinage law of|
1702? Instead of using the expres
sion "the institution of a new unit
or measure of value etc, why di -
n't he say "the resumption of the
old laws pioviding for the free
coinage of gold a..d silver the uni,

coins being the silver dollar con
taining three hundred and seventy
one and one fourth giains oi pure
silver V" The answer to these
questions is? color blindness.
Mr. CsrlUe then took up and

clared equal in value to thirty-two
pounds of that metal as measured
by our present standard or unit.
There is absolutely no truth in
this statement. The gold dollar 01
unit is a dishonest unit or measure
of value as it has a constantly ris
ing monetary value, and it was fas
tened upon this country only after
long and unscrupulous effort hy
the money- kings.
Tho silver dollar containing three
hundred and seventy-one and one
fourth grains of pure silver is oui
natural unit of value, and the ef
fect of the free coinage of silvei
will be to loose forever the deadly
grip of gold, forcing it into it3 prop
er place in cur monetary sv?lein,
[divesting it of its fictitious vaiu?*|
and reducing it to or near us na j
tural parity with silver at the ralio
of 1(> lo 1.
When this is accomplished pros
perity will return. The winter of J
our lin uncial discontent with all its'
blighting influences will p?>ss aw<iy,

our grand domain will echo and le
