ing for the pardon Thos. E. Watts,
who was convicted of manslaughter
the last term of conrt and sentenc
ed to a term of two years in the
penetentiary, has be<in circulated
in Camden this week. The petition
has been very generally signed.

A Child Birned to Dea
On Monday morning at the Tur

Death of a Claver Young Kan. 1
Out ^community was terrimy
shocked on Monday morning, 16th
inst,, over the announcement of the
sndden death of Alobza Frederick
Tripp, eldest son of C >1 A. Tripp.
Mr Tripp *as a great sufferer from
heart affection, of ffhich he died,
but his robust health, otherwise,
removed all thoughts of immediate
death, and when the announcement
was made it could hardly be real
ized that genial, kind hearted Fred
Tripp was dead.
The remains will he taken to
Pittsburg, his former home, where
he will be buried in the family bur

Meeting of School Trcistees
Pursuant to notice!, a meeting of
the school trustees jof the county
was held at the court house hist
Saturday.
Nearly all the districts were, re
presented, and a greit deal of in
terest was manifested.
The principal subject discussed
was the advisability of levying the
two mill special levf, and the ad
vantage of the districts getting up
on a cash basis. T^nse who spoke
in iavor of it were Messrs W. K.
Thompson, of No. 10, M. J. Atis
ley, of No. 4, Coluaibus Stokes oT
No. 3, J. M. HalT of No. 5, H. J.

A picnic at Harmony.

portion of West Wateiee , township
the writer had the pleasure of at
tendinga delightful picnic at the
Battle in Harmony section.
Your correspondent had/tlhe pleas
ure of meeting a great many of his
old friends, and was happy to see
their familiar faces, on such a
joyful occasion. The good people
of that neighborhood know how to
make one feel at home and enjoy
oneself at such a time, and are lite
the name of their village, full of
harmony. The dinner was as nice
as the most fastidious coald desire,
and the writer, like everyone else,
did his fall part bjT the dainty
viands before him. Your scribe
will long remember this event, the
most delightful picnic he ever at
tended. B.
Increase bf Taxes.
The tax books were opened on
Monday for the collection of taxes.
In this district, we have two special
levies ? 3 mills for the school tax
and three-fourths of a mill to pay
interest on the bonds for the build
ing of the new school building; this
to be added to the county and State
tax of 13 5-8 mills. Our taxes are
higher this year, the State tax be
ing increased 1 mill and the county
tax one half a mill; tax for p*9t
(county) indebtedness, one-eighth
?>f a mil!, an.I then we in the school
district have the three-fourths mill
tax extra to pay interest on the
school house bonds. Moreover, we
in the city of Camden will have aa
extra city tax of about 4 mills, to
make op the deficiency caused by

Harmony Presbytery convened at
Concord Church on last Wednes- *

cupied almost the entire sessions
of the body.- One matter of im
portance was the adoption of a

on the 4th Sunday in October. Dr.
Edmunds was appointed to preside;

When we say Hill is dead we
mean that the faithful kind and
spirited old horse owned by Mr
J us. R. Nelson, is no more. He
departed this life on last Wednes
day night after a slu.rt illness. He
was universaly known and liked
throughout this entire community
and it is with deep regret that we
chronicle his death.

glad that the bridges jon the Co
lumbia road have been repaired as
they were getting dangerous.

work on the Sawney's creek bridge
and will soon complete it.
