day Mr Finlej McCasklll, who
iives South-East of here, attempted
to cjross the depot creck, which was
very high from fche freshet. The
males in his two teams got beyond
their depth, and together with the
wagons, drifted down into the
'boshes and tree*, Mr McCaskil]
swain to tend, but came very near
losing all bis mules. They *rere
finally cut loose from the wagons
and gotten out. One of them' was
badly injured from scratches and

-A protacted meeting, coramenc
ing on the third Sunday, the l$th
of August and continuing until
last- Friday night, was held at
Friendship church in West W ate fee.
The pastor, Uev. T. W. Scruggs,
was ably assisted by Rev. S. D.
Yates. The meeting was decidedly
a good one, the coagegations being
uniformly large and appreciative.
The music was nue; Miss Jcniiifc
Hornaby, of Columbia, filled the
position of organist very aecepta/
bly, and the local choir was assis^d
by a number ? of good voices ffom
several other congregations. The
attendance was very large, persons
coming fron great distances; on
Sunday there were a number there
from miles in ^nearly every direc
tion. Mr Scrugg's services in that
locality have been greatly blessed,
and he has endeared himself more
and more in the hearts of his con
gregations.

A terrible rain 3lorm has been
raging here since 3resterday ( Sun
day) evening* This is the heaviest
storm ever experienced here for so
long at once. At 2 p. m. loday
(Tuesday) there is no sign of
abatement. Trees, gardens and
fences are blown down. The cot
ton, late corn, peas and sugar cane
.Are laying on the ground, and the
woods are fall of leaves whipped
from the trees by the hard wind.
From what I can sec and hear great
destruction to the crops has taken
place. The open cotton is ruined,
young corn is whipped iu'.o ribbons j
and peas badly bruised. '5. ?e writ- j
er's yard looks like a new ground ;
just cat down. The roads are iin- 1
passible from fslten trees.
Rev J. W. Kenney has postponed
his meeting at Pisgah until some

The industrious farmers are now
in a hurry with their fodder to com
mence picking cotton, which is
opening, rather prematurely, where
it is injured with rust; and they
will have'their hands full in a few
weeks. The cotton crop is much
better than was expected, hut it is
rather discouraging to the farmer
for the price to decline as the cot
ton senson advances, but probably
it will all work out for the best.
