Attempted "Wreck
Samuel Bowen and Hampton
Tick, two negroes, have beer, ar
rested and lodged in jail for an at
tempt to wreck a train on the S. C.
road l ist Sunday. A. cross-tie was
placed on *,he ttack on the trestle
just below the depot, and would
have c:iU9ed a terrible accident had
the train been thrown otf; fortu
nately, the train w.is n?t derailed.
Viik, who appears to be idiotic,

do the deed, and paid him the sum
of five cents for it.
Assignments.
Mr W. T. Hail, undertaker and
dealer in wagons, buggies, etc., has

Taylor <fc Co. closed their doors
last Saturday, hav;ng made an as
signment to Mr W. M. Shannon, at
torney, for the benefit of their cred
itors. The liabilities of the firm
are nearly ?5,000 and it is thought
that the assets' will approach that
amount. They had decided to dis
continue business and would have
wound up their afFairs satisfactor

be a popular favorite.

Now, we think Dr Pope ought to
be satisfied with what he has not
already and let somebody else Have
the office. The government will

For District Attorney, we would
like to see Gen Youmans reap
pointed. He made an excellent
officer of the Government.
Gen J. f). Kennedy ought to be
sent back to China. His State and
the South were hdaored in hi? ap
pointment.
Jofn .T. Hemphill, I guess, will
get a soft appointment. I am told
he is a "pet" of Cleveland.
Gen Hampton has been houored
by allowing him to choose either of
two offices. Some of us would like
to get a fat Federal office without
choosing.
