j [Spceial in News & Courier, Jaft. 2.}
The majority of people otKer-i
jsnaw county, on being asked the
condition of the county, will give
you. an insight unintentionally int*>
! tinti? own affairs, and on being
? as-ked how collections are, will in
advertently t?-ll you ubout their j
own collections. There are some
exceptions, but the best way to get
' at the true condition is to ask many
, and, taking into consideration the
.extent of each one's business, to
deduce our own" opinion. j
| There is no doubt hut that the
condition of the farcers, and, with
them, of ail others, in Kershaw
county is belter than in previous
years. Very few were able to hold
i their cotton for the advancod price,
I w h Lch camo late in liie season, but
all are consequently better otf, a*
| they will have corn and meat too
for next year. Tbe farmers and
merchants too are very hopeful.
Apparently a'l our merchants are
on a solid foundation. They are
baying closely, and, as a rule, are
collecting well. A safe estimate
of collections will go over 90 per
cent. ? in some individual instances
a threat deal higher and io some a
little lower, down to 80 or 85 per
cent. There have been very few
cases wlwre parties farming on liens
have been sold out, as has been the
common case in previous years.
The percentage of decrease in the
acreage of eotlon last year, various
lyestitna'ed from 10 to 20 percent,
and nearer the latter, was planted
tn corn, peas and potatoes and soitih
wheat. While there were some
hundred acres planted in tobacco,
with the probability of more in
1893, this acreage is too small to
affect seriously the amount planted
in other crops. It is thought thai
the farmers wilt plant a little more
cotton in 1893, though not as much
as in 1891. The probability is that
they will continue to pay more at
tention to grains. Six weeks lalei
thna this last year little or no fer
tilizers had been bought, but *ome
have bought already for 1893, which
is an indication of an ineieaso in
coltou.
