Robert Wilson who is a deacon of
Beaver Creek Baptist Church that at
a meeting of their congregations on
ftuulay of last week they were try
ing to raise some money for church
expenses, when Mr. and Mrs. James
H. Work, Jr. and two other ladies of
Camden ? presumed to he Northern
tourists ? who were present contrib
uted one dollar each, $4.00 in all,

Rufus Carlos a young colored man
, of this section who has been living in

jn a hospital in that city last week.
His father, Tony Carlos, went up and

was in New Site Baptist Churchyard
on Sunday.

Taxes ? taxes ? taxes 1 To para
phrase Mark Twain's famous remark
?about the weather ? every one talks
About them, bnt nobody ever does
anything about them ? except raise
them.
Will you allow a citizen, voting this
year in South Carolina for the first
time, to record a few thoug(h/ts in the
matter?
What we would all like would be to
have no taxes. Such an ideal is of
course unattainable. The nex^ best
thing is to have th?m as low as pos
sible. Then arises the question, a?
to what services we demand of gov
ernment which require taxes.
South Carolina, like all other states,
more than sttto should have,
when times were good. However, in
the vast economic changes which aro
now in process of taking shape, South
Carolina to my mind occujpdes a very
favorable position which she can take
advantage of ? if she will ? to her
?permanent (benefit.
With the general exception of cot
ton and lumber, it has always been
an agricultural \sfcate. Midway on
Atlantic coast, between tlhe North
and extreme South, it has a ten
months season and can grow anything
from apples to wheat. It has nothing
to "Bcrap" to meet new conditions ?
unless one excepts a few narrow
ideas; it can 'Start from "scratch" A
fine system of highways exists, which
is constantly being added to ? uso
them. Plenty of water (power, miner
al resources, railroads and space and
only 1,750,000 people 1
Now, what haa all this got to do
willn taxes, you ask.
Bring them down by getting more
captial, industry and population here
over which to spread theml
Take advantage of present drought
and strike situation to solicit suitable
business to locate here, where we
have the space for all employees to
own a five to ten acre home plot.
Many families will have to move
from the drought- stricken West, and
after their experience would consider
it heaven !h?ere. >
Tourist traffic is welcome and val
uable, but I suggest some state de
triment be delegated to start at
once on this matter. No chamber of
commerce nor any other -state agency
?will co-operate in such a program
end I do not believe It can (be done by
"ballyhoo".
Modernize some of our laws. Why
should not the state that trained
<tOalvacade" have some horse racing
Don't be hypocrites.
Pass a workman's compensation
law. All manufacturing states have
them, and South Carolina is going to
be a manufacturing state if dhe is to
(progress at all.
Put i ft the governor's office a level-*
headed man, an executive with visiion
(I intend no disparagement of Gover
nor Blackwood), and in the legisla
ture men of business experience,
broad-minded men, who can see the
state as a whole.
In spite of our dry spell ? recently
broken ? we are much better off phy
Bically and climatically than many
other parts of the nation, and if pre
sent opportunities are firmly grasped,
the future of South Carolina will be
bright indeed.
