A TRUE GHOST STORY

"In 1022, after the death of I'.ois
Penrose, my family took occupancy
of his apartment In Washington.
From our tlrst night there a strange
phenomenon pervaded the place," re
lated Mary Roberts Uinehart famous
novelist. "The distraction was only
to end with my mother's death.
"The account of the phenomenon
has been told before, and I am tell
ing It now, not because 1 believe la
*ny physical manifestation of sur
vival alter death, but because I know
one cannot sny that because he or
she cannot see a thing, it does not
exist.
"Perhaps the disturbances were
warning us of danger to my mother;
perhaps some child, Incarnate, was
playing around our rooms. Whatever
It was some strange phenomenon dlT

"The scene was set there, of course,
for the rumor of a glu?st.
"Immediately after Senator Pen
rose's death the colored maids wer^
mating that the dead man was walk
ing. On our first night In the apart
ment, after we had turned off our
lights, there was a rush of some
Ming through the room. The effect
was as if a large black curtain had
been drawn swiftly across us. Doc
tor IUnehart sat up In bed.
"What on earth was that?" he
asked.
"We turned on the lights, but*
everything was as it should be. The
windows were open, but there was
nu wind, and the narrow curtains
Were held lint to the wall by heavy
bands that could not blow under any
circumstances.
"The next morning brought an un
usual incident. We had no servants
gftve Marie, the personal maid for my
mother and myself. At seven the next
rooming Marie entered with my
coffee. I reproved her for coming
?ftrly.
"'Hut you rang, madam. Hang
twice.'
"Hater Marie complained repeated
ly of my ringing the bell which con
nected my room with hers, when I did
not ring. One day I myself heard the
ball ringing In her room, when I was

"After that we accepted the bell,
and In tine heenme accustomed to

place; eurlous and unexplalnable
noises and stirrings disturbed not
only Marie, but myself, two mints

"My eldest Ron. who came home for

deep.
"A few days later we were all out
? of the apartment which was locked.
When we returned we found to our
amazement the pandanus plant sit- j
ting neatly upright on the living .
room floor, minus its crock, and some J
thirty feet from where It belonged. j
"One night we gave a dinner. The
next day the papers ran a tale that
the I'dnrose apartment was haunted,
and that the dead Senator was ring
ing his hell. Whereupon a state
ment came from the senate ofllce
building, that the boll from his pri
vate ofllce had rung for some time
after his death, two idiort sharp
penis. Also a page from the senate
later told me that the boys would
not go into his ofllce If they could
help it, that there was a ghost In It.
"I have never laid any of the dis
turbances to the so-called earth
bound spirit of Mr. Penrose. But
we have never found an explana
tion. We even had a special tjpe
of Ynle lock on the entrance door
lf> our apartment. I myself chocked
on such things ns the ringing of the
bedroom bell, and that repeatedly.
"Suddenly, dreadfully, the matter
terminated In my mother's death.
Tor fourteen years she had been
paralyz' d, and bad never attempted
to get into her bath without help;
It was considered an Impossibility for
her to do it.
"One night Marie turned ojx the
hot water, and then was called away.
And in the few moments of absence
my mother did the supposedly Im
possible, got into the scalding water

Stamps Show Public Parks
Post Office Department Is Picturing the Beauties to Be
Found in the National Playgrounds.

age stamps In September when the
Post Ofllce department released the
four and eight-cent Issues of its na
tional park series. On September IS.
the eight-cent Zlon park* (Utah)
stamp* Joined Its fellows already re
leased for their twofold purpose of
carrying mall and proclaiming the
beauties of America's out-of-doors.
The gray-green stamp had in Its cen
ter a reproduction of ''The Great
White Throne" ? towering teirrplelike
rock formation found In the park.
A week later, a four-cent sticker of
autumn brown color, representing
Mesa Verde National park of Col
orado, to<*k its place In the upper
right-hand corner of part of the na
tion's mall. On Its face stands, in h
central design, the camera's story of
"CI i ft Palace," an awesome ruin of
the now vanished cliff dwellers.
Yellowstone Best Known National
Park.
"If your knowledge of geografihy Is
good," says a bulletin from the Wash
ington headquarters of the National
Geographical society, "you probably
will know, In which stares eight of
the ten parks are located; but only
If your knowledge Is much bettor
than average will you be able cor
rectly to place them all.
"Yellowstone has been familiar to
Americans since It became the coun
try's lirst national park In 1872. Yet
every year thousands of visitors turn
homeward from its gates unaware
that its area Includes parts of Mon

Alaska, complete the list.

horn with the Issue of this series.
The Colosseum, of Home Is depicted
on an Italian stamp; a picture of the
Arc de Trlomphe Is the central fea
ture of a French Issue ; and several
nations have placed miniature maps
on the fates of their stamps.

Longest Life Expectancy
New Zeulanders have a longer life
expectancy than the people of anv
other country In the world, accord
ing to statisticians of a prominent
life Insurance company.
The average male Infant born In
New Zealand can expect to live to
the age of sixty-five, while the aver
age female Infant can look forward
to living within six weeks of sixty
eight years, says a statistical bulletin
of the life insurance company.
The corresponding figures for
white babies of the United States
are 50.31 for boys and G2.S3 for girls.
An exceedingly low mortality for
New Zealand babies during the first
I year is reported In the bulletin. It
Is only 88.35 per 1,000 for males and
*25.48 for females. The correspond
ing figures for the United States in
1930 were C0.SG and 48.'J1.
Raleigh's Last Pipe Shown
A pipe, said to have been pre
sented by Sir Walter Raleigh to his
executioner shortly before he laid
Vis head on the block, has attracted
much attention while on display In
London recently. It Is owned by
J. Thompson of Maesyllan, England,
who Inherited It from his great
grandfather, who, in turn received it
from (Jeorge Stephenson, Inventor of
the steam engine. The pipe was a
mascot on the lloeket. Stephenson's
famous engine. It has two stems and
is decorated -with carvings-featuring
Indian types.
