Predicts Race of Supermen
Columbia University Professor Explains How Organic
Chemistry May Hurry Process of Evolution
to Bring Highest Development.
The coming of the superman and
the super race may not have to wait
for the uncertain processes of evo
lutton taking hundreds of thousands
of years, but may be brought about
within a few generations through or
ganfc chemistry.
A prophecy to this effect, that
there would be a "synthetic super
man" In the not distant future, was
made before the American Chemical
society by Prof. Marstou T. Bogert
of Columbia university.
Organic chemistry, Professor Bo
gert said, was gradually learning the
relationship between certain chem
icals and their Influence on man's
behavior and personality. It was
also learning more and more about
the chemical constitution of living
matter and to synthesize products in
which It Improves vastly upon na
ture.
The time must come, therefore,
Professor Bogert said, when the
chemist would be able to make sub
stances that would greatly Increase
the thinking powers of the brain, as
well as the strength, health and
beauty of the body, without having
to wait for the hit or miss methods
of evolution, which from the human
point of view, might lead In the
wrong direction.
When that time came, he said, syn
thetic chemicals would not be used
merely for the healing of ills and
the correction of nature's errors, but
for the positive direction of the
forces of life by the intelligence of
man.
With the intelligence nature en- 1
dowed him with he would devise
" ways to develop greater Intelligence,
by finding artlllclal means for utlllz
' lng potentialities In his brain power
now lying dormant because nature
had not provided the means for mak
ing It work at full capacity.
While many areas of the brain had
been charted t\nd their purpose made
known, there were still vast areas,
fully half of the human brain, still
as unexplored, dark and mysterious
as tho vast wilderness In the Afri
can or South American jungles, said
Professor Bogert.
We were now able, he added, to
synthesize drugs thnt had a pro
found effect not only on the func
tioning of the body, for good or for
ovll, but also on the human personal
ity as well. Gradually we were learn
ing the chemical relationships be
tween these substances and bodily
activity and were making headway
Jn learning why tboy produced their
results. There was every reason to
hope, Professor Bogort said, thnt
chemists would eventually be nhle to
produce substances that would bring
out the latent powers of the known
and of the now unknown areas In
tho brain.
Instead of drugs producing stupor,
or bringing to the surface qualities
of cruelty and violence, we would
have drugs that would enhance alert
ness and Intelligence, stimulate spir
itual qualities, enable the body to
utilize all Its latent powers without
any nfter effects and make It pos
sible for man to attain a greater and
keener esthetic enjoyment of his own
life, with great good will toward the
rest of his fellows, "synthetic super
men" llko himself.
Significant steps promising definite
results In this direction have been
made In the last two years In chem
ical research laboratories in Knglnnd,
Germany, Switzerland and in the
United States. The research had re
vealed, Professor Bogert reported,
that seven substances -In nature, all
producing different effects some es
sential for life while others were
very destructive, were all derivatives
of one and the same substance, a
chemical known as phenanlhrlne, tho

Denmark Ban* Hair Dyes
Denmark's law against the sale of
hnir dyes containing harmful Ingre
dients Is believed to ban the use of
any coloring for tresses. According
to a Danish Hairdressers' union ofli
clal, no means has been found to
supply natural shades without the
use of ingredients which are classed
as harmful substances. He adds that
many working women, whose hair
turns gray early in life, are forced
to use dyes to retain their positions.

The pbaraoh whose mummified
body has reposed In the desert toml>
for 50 centuries may be restored to
essentially the same appearance he
had the hour he died. The lost art
of the Egyptian mummymaker can
be reversed and the effects of mil
lenlums wiped away by the magic of
modern science, according to a report
made to the Journal of Physical An
thropology at Washington by Dr. J.
Glllman, South African anatomist.
One need stop only Just short of the
process of bringing the man to life
again.
The discovery resulted from expe
riments with the naturally *uumml
fled bodies of Bantu tribesmen, be
lieved to be about two centuries old,
which were restored to practically
lifelike appearance by being kept for
14 days in a solution of sodium hy
droxide and alcohol, the action of
which could be carefully controlled.
"The possibilities of the applica
tion of this method are Infinite," GUI
man reports. By careful manipula
tion the facial and general bodily
features of the ancient pharoahs and
their courts could be returned as If
magically to their original state.
"After this treatment the color re
turns to the skin, together with the
characters of skeleton and hair. The
natural ridges that occur in the skin
can also be restored, and, had the
hand been present, It would have
been possible to revive the epidermal
ridges and fossa and fingerprints
could have been taken with the
greatest of ease."

Use That Closet Space
to the Best Advantage

method of keeping closets neat and
trim. To meet the requirements of
such a scheme all sorts and kinds
of boxes, durable yet of light weight
are found in the shops. There are
boxes for shoes and stockings, boxes
for blouses, boxes for gloves and hand
kerchiefs, boxes for lingerie, and
boxes for almost every conceivable
thing which can be folded or laid
away and kept good. The boxes men
tioned are for clothes closets, but the
handy containers nre found excellent
furnishings for other closets too. It
seems a bit odd to talk of furnish
ing closets, but that is precisely what
is done when the spaces are fitted
with boxes.
Closet boxes differ from ordinary
kinds, for, since they come In sec
tional cases, they are uncovered, and
can be pulled in and out. As a mat
ter of fact they are drawers rather
than boxes, although they are cus
tomarily called boxes. The cases
come in endless sizes and shapes to
suit shapes and sizes of closet spaces
as well as to best accommodate the
contents.
In furnishing a closet with these
box-drawer cases it should be remem
bered that they should fill nooks, and
stand on shelves, and be low and out
of the way of the space needed for
hanging up garments. It Is assumed
that one or more clothes poles ex
tend the length of the closet, or pos
sibly its width, If the closet Is deep.
Kither of those arrangements uses to
best advantage the space area of the
closet, leaving the walls free for the
cases of boxes.
For those who live in rented houses
or apartments it is Important to have
these boxes easily portable. They
can ho purchased In sections, some
times so planned that they can oc
cupy a long, low space, when resting
on one side, or a high, narrow one
when standing on end. In each In
stance the drawers fit Into place cor
rectly merely by putting them In to
snlt the positioning of the case.
The boxes and enses may nil be of
extra heavy cardboard. Or they may
have the cases of wood and drawers

Persons who have no little children
or whose children always eagerly eat
what Is set before them should not
read this article. It will be foolish
ness to them. Of course, "Hunger Is
the best sauce" and perfect health
Insures hunger. If appetite Is lack
ing, parents should learn the reason,
not merely use devices to coax tho
child to eat. However, there are
times when coaxing the appetite Is
legitimate.
"Come, Donnle, the 'Man In the
Moon' wants to play hide and seek
with you," Mother called to the young
lad who had refused to come to the
table because he was "tired of break
fast food."
Mother went on about her work,
but Donnle's curiosity had been
aroused. He peeked around the back
of his chair, then climbed up Into It
hurriedly that he might the better
see the funny man In his porringer.
After a pleased laugh he seized li Is
spoon and went alter him, first on
one side, then on the other, until the
man had completely failed from view,
together with the "milky way" and
the "stars," and Donnle called hap
pily, "Mother, I hid the man all
away."
This mother had used her lmaglna
tlontand from the breakfast food she
had made a magic dish by forming
the cereal into a round, moon-like
mound, using raisins for the eyes,
nose and mouth, surrounding the face
with the "milky way" and cutting the
toast in t lie shape of stars. Simple,
wasn't It? It took only a lew min
utes longer but oh, what a difference
it made to the child. It was all that
was needed to start this convalescent
day off just right.
The circus fat mn > Is another fa
vorite with the children. Make the
body of half a peeled orange, and add
strips of buttered toast for arms and
legs. A three-cornered piece of toast
becomes a hat, when set above a
round of banana which serves for a
head. Itaislns make funny eyes, es
pecially If they are pulled out long
to look oriental. A slice of red
cherry makes the smiling mouth.
What looks like a hard-boiled egg
may surprise and Interest the little
tots by turning out to be custard
molded in that shape, and "snow
balls" may he either rice, mashed po
tatoes, or hominy, and If stuffed with
minced chicken will contain even
more magic.
A candled cherry perched on the
top of a "hill" of custard, a marsh
mallow boat floating on a "sea of
cocoa, or bits of parsley to represent
"moss" tossed about on the waves of
soup, nil carry the child into a world
of ploy and toke his mind off the
"every-dayness" of his regular diet.
Carrots are a vegetable of which
most children quickly tire, but try
cutting the carrots In the shape of
"gold fish" and see how eagerly the
child will flsh for them.

Sometimes, Just a change In the
manner of serving will produce the
needed effect. One mother puts the
sugar In a shaker and lets her child
sprinkle It over his cereal himself.
Another child has a little, fat goose
cream pitcher from which he likes
to pour the cream.
If the child becomes tired of his
milk or cocoa perhaps ho will like
drinking It through a straw. A little
surprise, such as a nut, some raisins,
or small bits of candled fruit that
the child likes, may be dropped to
the bottom of the glass to be found
when the beverage Is all gone.
"Variety Is the spice of life" for
children as well as grown petfple.
Whatever plan the mother adopts,
however, it should be one that will
call the child's attention away from
himself. Many children form bad
habits just because they have discov
ered they can attract attention to
themselves In this way. The wise
mother never "fusses" over the
child's eating. Neither does she ap
pear to pay attention to the child's
fussing. She anticipates It, and so
prevents It.

Gold in the mountainous dumps of
the great Rand mining district of
Africa may be saved by the invention
of a Johannesburg man. The metal
is of such low grade that ordinary
methods of extracting It are unprofit
able. Secret experiments, which are
said to have been successful, have
been stopped pending the taking out
of patents. Most of the gold of the
world Is now obtained, as In the
Hand, by deep mining from quartz
rock. The rock is crushed and treat
ed by amalgamation, or cyfinldlng, to
recover the gold contained In It.
About six pennys' worth of gold are,
on the average, recovered from every
ton of rock, and the crushed rock Is
deposited In large dumps.
