Mrs. W. H Harris very charmingly
entertained the members of the Wed
nesday morning bridge club with a
lovely luncheon at the Palmetto Tea
Rooom at their last meeting.
Guests of Mrs. Harrs besides club
members were: Mrs. Anderson of
Richmon, Mrs. H G Marvin <rfid Mrs.
John W Corbett
After lunch Mrs. Harris took her
guesta to her home on Fair street,
where contract bridge was enjoyed. 1
Prizes were given at each tabic and
those winning were: Mrs. W. L De
Pass, Mrs. John W Corbett and Mrs.
Alicu Maryft.
ENTERTAINS CLUB
Mrs. Kirby Tupper delightfully
entertained the member? of her con
tract bridge club Friday afternoon at
her home at Mulberry Plantation.

club members were present.

The hostess served sandwiches, tea
and homemade candy.

SPINSTERS CLUB MEETING
The Spinsters Club held a most en
joyable meeting Monday evening with
Miss Faith do Loach on Lyttloton
Street. Four tables for contract
bridge were attractively arranged in
the spacious living room which was
decorated with marigolds. Guests
playing other th.\n club members
were: Misses Charlotte Oswald,
Julia Seabrook, Carolyn Burnet, and
Mrs. John de Loach. Top score pri'',e
was won by Miss Dolly Singleton.
Miss Carolyn Burnet bride-elect was
presented a dainty gift. The hostess
used Halloween table covers, napkins,
cups and saucers which gave a very
pretty effect. A salad course was
served.
PRETTY PARTY FOR VISITOR
Mrs. Wylie Sheorn was hostess at
a lovely bridgo party of 3 tables
Monday afternoon honoring Mrs.
Claude Williams of Baltimore who is
visiting Mrs. Etta I. Williams and
family In the card rooms a profus- j
ion of klondyke cosmos and marigolds ;
were used. A color scheme of green
and yellow was carried out in the sal
ad course which was served. Top
score prize was won by Mrs. Robert
Chewning, low score prize by Mrs. L.
P Tobin, the consolation prize was
cut by Mrs M M Rt-asonover and the
honor guest received a very lovely
gift.

colhsions to be staged as the features
of the super-thrill programs to be

of Daredevil* at the Sumter County
Fair Wednesday and Thursday af
ternoons, November 1 and 2, it is be
leved that record throngs will pack
the grounds theso days.
The Congress of Daredevils and
their spectacular stunts have gripped
the imagination of Sumter folk so

collision actually will be staged.
In answer to the doubting-Thomas- '
J. Cliff Brown, Fair manager,

Destruction of cotton stalks early
i nthe fall is one of the most import -
ni t stops in boll weevil control, says
the Ruerau of Entomology, U. S. De
partment of Aguculture, which has
been advocating this method for more
than* 25 years. Cotton should bepicked
as rapidly as possible, says the bu
reau. As soon as picking is complet
ed the stalks should he plowed under.
In cases where it is impractical to
plow under the stalks farmers will do
well to turn cattle, sheep or goats
into the field to graze. There are
large areas where cotton is already
almost if not completely picked out
and hence there is an unusual oppor
tunity now to clean up cotton fields
as a weevil control measure. Tf the
cotton stalks on these, farms are de
stroyed promptly the weevil popula
tion for next spring will be greatly
reduced. Community action will pro
duce the host result shut e< *v farm
er should destroy the stalks on his
farm as early as possible whether h's
neighbor does or not. The individ
ual fanner who destroys his cotton
stalks early will benefit, because boll
weevils do not move in large numbers
unti late in the srason. s' that lii<

advanced that it is not likely to b.>
