Science at Work
Nullifying the Presidency
Independence Too Soon?
Ireland's New Money
A pompous British coal mine owner
who asked a famous scientist "What
practical good is all your science?"
was surprised to learn that he had
wasted thousands of pounds boring for
coal through certain strata below
which coal does not exist.
Other mine owners, worried by gas
explosions that destroyed Innumerable
miners, got from Sir Humphrey Davy
the miner's lamp that ended the ex
plosions.
Wherever you go science Is at work,
visible or Invisible. John P. Blckel, of
the Mclntyre Porcupine mine In north
ern Ontario, tells what science does
for gold miners that work far under
ground during the hours of sunlight.
Leaving their work they take off
their digging clothes and walk through
a Series of showers graduated In tem
perature, and get rid of the dust of
the mine. Then they sit naked on a
moving platform, with brilliant artifi
cial sunlight shining on them, stimulat
ing their blood through the power of
actinic rays. Their ride of a few
minutes through artificial sunshine
lasts long enough to give them exactly
as much of the rays as doctors want
them to have, equivalent to six hours
In natural sunlight.
They change to their surface clothes,
refreshed by the showers of water and
actinic ray baths.
That Is an Improvement on mining
methods of old days, when women on

of British coal mines, drngged cars

The senate of the United States re
fused, 44 to 37, LaFollette and Blalno
of Wisconsin voting with the Demo
crats, to confirm any further nomina
tions by President Hoover.
The Benate has a right to exercise
its constitution power as it chooses.
Whether it has the right to deprive
the President of the United States,
during several months, of power to
exercise functions that belong to his
office, Is a question.
Confirmation by the senate Is sup
posed to depend on the fitness of the
appointee. It is in the nature of a
conspiracy not to confirm under any
circumstances, regardless of fitness,
and that might possibly be made to
Interest the Supreme court.

THE BEST MAN AND THE
MAID OF HONOR.
I I have said frequently that the
maid of honor Is never within speak
ing distance of the best man. and In
no sense a partner. Of course the
best man Is paired with the maid of
honor at all the wedding festivities.
Just as the bridesmaids are paired
with the ushers, and the bride her
self paired with the groom, if there
are to be many Informal parties
given for or by the bride and gFoom.
But on the day of the wedding, al
though the maid of honor and the
best man stand, walk and sit beside"
various other members of the bridal
party, not once do they come even
within speaking distance of each
other. They balance the picture, It
is true, but always at Hides opposite
to each other, or each as a figure
nlone.
For example: The best man en
ters with the groom. The maid of
honor enters alone. During the cere
mony the best man stands at the
right of the chancel, the maid of
honor at the left. As soon as the re
cessional starts, the best man goes
Into the vestry alone, to fee the
clergyman, or he dashes around on
the outside of the church with the
groom's hat nnd stick if he wants to
I grin nt the bride and groom as they

ton, before the ceremony. Even so.
although ha may see the maid of
honor into her carriage with the
bridesmaids, he must go back to the
vestry and give the clergyman his
fee In n properly tranquil manner.
He could not very well have tossed
him an envelope on the take-oft for
a dash with the groom's hat nnd
stick. According to best taste he
may not walk down the aisle with
the maid of honor, unless there has
been a sudden double wedding and
he nnd she have also plighted their
troth. At the reception she stands In
the receiving line between the bride
nnd a bridesmaid, but he has bo du
ties whatever. At the bridal table
(if there Is one) he sits on right of
bride. She sits on left of groom, so
you see that never are they "part
ners."
