Bowers, of near Kershaw, was brought to the Camden hospital Friday for an oper ation. Her condition is considered serious. Mrs. E. G. Kirven and two of her children, who have been visiting the parents of the former, returnea to their home in Darlington last week. Mr. J. B.' Cureton spent the past week end at Murrell's Inlet. Mr. J. C. Nicholson was'confined to his home last week with :i renewed attack of rheumatism. lie has been a great sufferer from thi3 malady. Large numbers as sembled niound the tent at the even ing services to witness what was go ing on, while quite a number of inter ested ones occupied seats under the tent. A great deal of interest was taken in the meeting. At the close of the meeting the pas tor, Mfr. They now have, a room in which services are held. The viiiting pastor thanked each and eveVy one for the interest and kindnesses shown him while here. Stanley Llewellyn, recently elected commander of the state American Legion. About 165 enthusiastic legionnaires and friends were present to enjoy the feast and good fellowship. R. M". Kennedy, Jr., mayor of Camden and (prominent leg ionnaire, presided. There were & number of prominent visitors, from various sections of the state present, invitations had been extended to oth, ers who vound 'chat ihey t,;uld not attend, a,nd^ .Mir. Kennedy read their letters, the first one being a very cor dial letter from Gov. Richards who expressed his high appreciation that the honor of choosing, without oppos iton, a state commander, came to Kershaw county. Oscar Doyle, of Anderson, whom Mr. Llewellyn will succeed in Oot^hp-r was rresent and made a br;ef at. Iross. George Levy, of Sumter, forme ? state commander, was heard with delight. Col. J. Mon roe Johnson, of Marion, whom" the - * ganization hri-es to elect notional comrnarnJer, made a foiceful address. Carl Rosebc rough, local post com mander, welcomed the visitors. Former Juige M. L. Smith spoke of Mr. Llewcl!yn and his achievements since his oomin<-. to Camden from ' Massachusetts, his native state, and was genuinely applauded. CAMDEN MEN SAVED FROM .DROWNING Norman Huckabee and Father Had Narrow Escape Myrtle Beach, July 31. ? Heroism, clear mindpdness and endurance were displayed in the surf near here Unlay when Miss Helen Hagood of Aynor rescued Norman Huckabee and his father, M. G. Huckabee of Camden, f.icm drowning. The near trapedy occurred at Yau pcn beach, at>out two miles from here when young Huckabee, who weighs 175 pounds, became exhausted while swimming beyond his depth. Mr. Huckabee, nearer the shore, saw his son's plight and called to him to come jin. When the younger man answered jthat he could not make the shore his father struck out through the waves to lend aid. He was nearly exhaust ed himself when he reached his son an J was ur.able to bring him any nearer the beach. Norman, realizing that his father could not save him, jerked away form the elde.:- man's grip and begged him to return to shallow water while I he had the strength to do so. But ! Huckabee refused to leave tho sido of his son and continued in his ef forts toward .rescue until he saw Miss Hagood, an excellent swimmer, com ' ing toward them. He then turned toward the beach, but before reach ling safety he collaipsed. M.:. Hagood plunged ir.to the surf and brought the exhausted man in. In the mean time Miss Hagood was making efforts to save the son. She swam to within about five yards of youngs Huckabee. "Do not grab me and I will save ycu," she called to him. Too exhausted to answer, Hucka bee nodded his piomise. When Miss Hagood reached him he turned over on his back and allowed her to place an arm under his chin j'.nd agged him t;warJ the shire. A , strong wind atfd current made the ( journey slow and necessitated a slop ? while the rescuer changed position. J Finally she icached depth where she could stand. A rope "was thrown to the couple and they were pulled to | safety. i Miss Hagood was graduated from Wir.?thrcip< college with honors last year. While at school she took a ( course in life saving. She is a niece of Col. J. Monroe Johnson of Marion, j Niorman Huckabee, a graduate of , the University of South Carolina, is principal of the Batesburg-Leesville high school. Mr. Hagood also came in for a large ( share of the congratulations. Greet),' County Art Mr. Prentiss Meets Tragic Death News was received in Camden Friday of the tragic death of Nathan N. Prentiss at Woodstock, N. J. where h? had gone for a vacation. M:-.
