way, and living quarters above. This
brtdgfe has two thoroughfares, one
above the other. This bridge was
built in 1862, and is still in use today

The Ponte Vecchla. crosses, is a beau
tiful river, and the river separates
the city into two sections, pr districts.
It is the dividing line between the
rich andi the poor, the residential -
section of the well to do, and the in
dustrial, the leisure class and the
plain folk or working claSB. I
After we crossed this bridge, we
turned down an alley to the right.
All the streets of the cities of Eu
?? rope are only alleys, save tho prin
cipal streets. One can easily get lost '
in these winding alleys, be it London
or Havana. On the sides of this alley
Were shops and stores of various
kinds. .We entered a smaTl shop, a
very unpretentious one. It looked to
be as old as the city of Florence on
, the outside. On entering, ray eyes
fairly sparkled, as I saw show cases
full of most beautiful cameos, strings
of coral, pearl, and glass beads,
purses studded with precious Stones.
No bn^nassing by .the shop would
\ ever dreifhi that 8uch precious stones
\arid jewelrV was within that plain
old fashionM building.
I wanted to see how cameos were
made, so my guide carried me into
tlje back pt the store to the shop,
where thjy were carved. All about
were tabjf s with sea shells of various
kinds >iul sices.- Each workman had
a desk Apon which he carved the
cameo s. Prom ? the most colorful
part pf the sea shell was cut a piece
of shell the size of the intended cam*
eo. Then with delicate tools, and
gi^Ptaives ^ sharp as razor blades, they
*;? ^carved perfect cameos. These work?
men are artists in their carving, and
it w?M? a surprise to me , to see how
.skillful they were jln carving the
most delicate lines. of the faces of a
" Wbmanon the shells. Of course to
see the cameos e&rved right before
one's eyes, made one want to owri a
new cameo. Then we went to look at

^ , 'Some cameos there in the shop. The
clerk laid out before me a tray of
a half-hundred, and I began
to 'make my selection. At a glance
' I BaW the one I wanted, but 1 did not
tell the clerk so, but^ I looked and
priced, and looked again. The one 1
wanted was priced over five hundred
