Under conditions more difficult j than those which confronted Joffre's immortal "taxicab army" in its fran- i tic dash to the Marne in 1914, Model A Fords swept to victory in a special, ly arranged contest based on war emergencies staged by the military first aid section of the General Fin nish Automobile Association. Competing against fourteen differ ent makes of automobiles manufac tured in tho United States and one Itniian-made car, the sturdy Fords captured 18 out of 29 prizes. Ten of the fourteen "honor prizes" went to the Fordi. Every Ford which enter- i ed the cont'. sc finished the 400 kilo meter route. One was driven by a woman. The purpose of the Finnish Auto mobile Association is to promote all-: around driving training of its mom- 1 hers in order that they may be able to take an active part in war man-! euvers in a sudden emercency. Deal has a force of , hands at work putting down new I flooring on the Wateree river bridge. He is handling this work in such a way as not to interfere with traffic which is quite a consideration as the traffic is heavy over this bridge. The flooring is all the best grade of heart pine, sized, so that the floor will be smooth when laid. BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR KERSHAW COUNTY By J. Team Ciettys, Sec. Meeting of S. J. Benton Chapter, U. I). C. One of the nicest and most en_ thusiastic meetings of the Samuel J. Benton Chapter was held at the home of Mrs. Fred E. Culvern last Thurs day afternoon. There were forty members present. Misdames D. I'. Dye, C. O. Floyd and W. O. Fowler were the assistant hostesses. As the guests arrived they were invited to the punch bowl which was placed in a delightfully cool corner on the porch. After drinking punch and chatting for a few minutes, the members assembled in the large in ception room where the meeting was held. A splendid historical program was given, having been ararnged by the capable historian of the chapter. On motion made by Mrs. Culvern, the I = members voted to mark all graves of Confederate Veterans in the surround ing eountry cemeteries. The gra\c? in the Town of Kershaw having al ready been marked by the chapter. The guest of honor for the meeting was the Vice-Director of Kidge Dis trict, Mrs. A.fcH. Glascock of Lan caster. She made ar. interesting talk to the chapter on the splendid wu-k of Mr. Marion Sims during the War' between the States.
