Treatment of Color
of House Important
It is rare thut a house should pre
sent more thuu two colors, and there
should be nothing facetious or faddish
about th^fr choice.
A fttttise is lived in too long, and
under too many conditions of weather
and seasou, to say noticing of other
circumstances, to be extreme in any
way. It need not be so neutral as to
forego ull individuality, but it should
on the whole be rather conservative
than err on the other side.
The exterior should be neutral
enough to serve as a peaceful transl>
tlon between the Surroundings and
the Interior furnishings and to sit bar
moniously and quiet In its own
grounds.
If the house Is finished with smooth
siding, such as wide boards or clap
boards, It takes paint, but If It is cov
ered with rough sawed siding, such as
shingles or rough boards, stain should
be used.
Stain Is a ihln material and will not
Successfully tint smooth woodwork,
but It does penetrate deeply into the
purfaee of rough wood. These are
hnlcally known 11s shingle stains,
utlnough they may he applied Just as
well to uny wood or rough surface
whether shingles or boards.
Taint should he used on smooth
Hiding and trim where It will produce
u film of weather resisting material on
the outside of the hoards, penetrating
slightly into the wood liber.
Planning Adopted by
Kansas City Praised
Probably the most successful work
of city planning, as well as one of the
most extensive and beautiful residen
tial communities In the United States,
In the Country club district In Kunsas
City. The story of this remarkable
achievement of Its originator, J. C.
Nichols, has often been told ?among
other places, In this magazine. But it
deserves an occasional remembrance,
says World's Work.
Mr. Nichols has demonstrated that
beauty and good taste can be mads
to puy for he has been consistently
successful over a period of 15 years.
; Tls community Is growing in pop
ulation at the rute of 2,500 a year.

Explaining Increase
in Individual Homes
The average American man with a
family Is either living In a home of his
own, or Is looking forward to the time
when he can do so. A rented house
I or a city apartment In most cases pro
vides a temporary home only until
?uch time as the head of the house can
afford the privilege of firing his own
furnace, mowing his own lawn, and
^patching his own back-door steps.
This explains the cons increase
In individual homes. Nobody needs
j?to read up on building statistics to
learn that there Is a constant Increase
tn sturdy, well-built houses. ()o Into
sny large city and ride around the
fringe and one will find the landscape
cluttered with partly completed houses.
*A little further out will he found sub
divisions waiting for the building wave
which will soon engulf them.
Luminoua House Number ?
New innovations or adaptations to
J new uses of existing ones are without
end In the building Industry. An In
teresting application of lumlnnns ma
terial to house numbers Is one of the
latest additions tq the home owner's
convenience. This Is a number deeply
embossed In on aluminum plaque 2%
I by Inches, the upper surface be
j lng coated with black enamel and
baked, the lower surface being given
a scratchbrush finish. Then the cvn
ter portion Is coated with a good qunl
Itj of "Undark" radium-luminous ma
terial. This Is then Inclosed In an
aluminum frnme with clear glass.

To Beautify Highway
In order to beautify and shade the
main highways of the province of
Quebec that are 'without tree#, the
provincial government authorities are
planting 1100,000 trees this year. In
^addition to heuutlfylng the highways
Md providing shade in the summer

. Facilitiea for Pleasure
M^re and more, as wealth Increases
and leisure widens, superior facilities
for pleasure are an asset of Immense
value to cities, statesUnd even entire
COUhtrles. As Florida and California
Itallse their winter sunshtne and
armth io Canada,, New Kngland and

mmer coolness Into mints for coin
gold. Places th st possess real ad
