THE WATER EE MESSENGER Published Every Tuesday by CHAS. \N . BIRCH MORE, Prop. Subscription $1 .50 A Year in Advance Entered as Second Class Mutter at the | Postollice at Camden, S. C. Tuesday, November 17, 1 y 2 T> . LAW ENFORCEMENT. Those who heard the addresses I made by the representatives of t h ? ? Flying Squadron in the Haptist church i last week, obtained no doubt stronger I convictions tor the necessity oi' up- ! holding the Constitution of the State and of the United States, for upon I their observance the security of the j country depends. Trample the e< n stitution under foot and our eoun- , try is gone. The Flying Squadron is doing a fne work by travelling o\v: the country to help ar vise a sentiment in favor of law enforcement. The Eighteenth Amendirtint was one out of many hundreds of amendments proopsed that wa- ratified by an ov erwhelming majority ef the state.-, forty-six out of forty-eight, and this shows clearly what the sentiment of the country was with regard to na tional prohibition. If tin laws ar ? enacted which the Fl><:u; .-i|u..d ron will propose, then . i: be a decided step taken t-waiv et '"orccine lit, of the | t> ?>? i I ? : law. 'i y would have .Judges stopped l'ret i a p.. sing suspended s-uiteinc . ar: I when foreigners who are 1 1 - > t r uia". ized citizens violate the lav. the; would have them shipped bark in their own country mi the :'.rst stun they could be put on. You frequently hear wet advuea'e. say that there is more h.skey n \v under prohibition than there wa's b. - fore the adoption of the Kighteemh Amendment, but any carefsl student knows this is not true. Suppose tha" it could be possible for whiske y to in sold in any one of the- counties of th ? State for even thirty days, can't y i imagine the throng of wets who would be travelling to that county to get si ? Then if it is so plentiful now every where, why should people travel mile s and miles to get it? Whiskey is sold illegally and the lignt sentences and the lukewarmne&s of goon citizens are responsible for it in a large meas ure. BOOST WITH A PURPOSE. Boosting is all right in its way, but boosters should always have a real purpose in boosting. For instance' right at this particular time there is much talk about a new hotel, and un less a new hotel is built it would b : well to tuke down the boosting signs for awhile ,for Camden has dove loped to such an extent along either lines that larger hotel accomodations are necessary. With a modern hotel, six or eight stories high, well furnishe I and well conducted, Camden could not have a better advertisement. It is gratifying to know that some enter prising, patriotic citizens nri urging this enterprise, and it is hoped tha. offiKts will result in getting it. i the people of Camden want a new ho tel and want it bad enough they can get it, and we believe that they will gut it, for those who are behind th i movement are urging it with a ue tcrmination that will win. BETTER FARM I NO All over Our Country there is i growing demand that agricultural college:; minimize training in pro fessions and do more training of stu dents in real farming. There will always be a percentage of young people from the farms enter ing I he professions, but. it should no? bo the business of the farmer col leges to train them in that direction. Norway hn<* <12 agricultural college-? besides high schools and training schols to teach farming, all confining themselves to producing better t iller < of the soil. Ohio is providing training school; to fit. young farmers for doing all the repairing of machinery and building work of every description on the farm Farm colleges in Our Country will have to make? a better record in thi direction. REASONABLE TAXATION I1ASK OF PROSPERITY There is a point, in taxation a* which industry tends to break dour, nnd prosperity gives place to bar I times nnd panic. Nothing can pre vent such nn occurrence except cur tailment of taxes. That is hard i> accomplish, because taxes themselves go to the upbuilding of an army of government, employees who t an swing elections. Federal, state and local governments should be uv ? ite 1 and extraneous and needle s :? t'viti ?< weeded out. There is no ether vav to maintain prosperity on n perma nent basis. The United States today generate and consumes more than half of ill the electricity produced in .he entir" world. And with only 7 per een t of the worlePs production, it has more than 8C per cent of the world's rail road mileago. There are two large manufacturing plants that send us each week articles telling about their wonderful product ion, how it has increased and general ly now tin y are adding to their in cuir.. Neither of these concerns arc can,. ;.ny ad\ ertis:ng in our ad \ ending v'iluinr.a, yet they send in sonc_ Hints such lengthy news stories iha'. .1 . -t.- t'.ieia extra .ostage oil their lil.crs.
