COURT ADJOURNS
Court of general sessions for this
county, which convened on Monday
morning, 7th inst., adjourned Friday.
After disposigg of a score or more

tion law, in which there was only-ono
acquittal, and sevoAi'l other minor
cases, une trial of Manning Hutson
and Richard Goodwin. charged,
with the murder of Willie Knox about
tow years ago in his field in the West

will be recalled that Detective Rodg
ers was assigned to this case a few
weeks ago and a slug that was cut
from the heart of Knox was used a:i a
clue and led to the arrest of Hutson
and Manning. The jury after delib
erating for some time rendered a
verdict of not guilty.
Jim and Lou Kelly, white, were
tried twice for violating the prohibi
tion law and at each hearing of the
case a mistrial was ma>de. Subse
quently Jim Shirley entered a plea of
guilty and the cAse against Lou Kelly
was nol prossed. Shirley was given
a sentence of one year, and after ser
vice of month, sentence to bo sus
pended upon good behaviir.
A consent verdict was taken in the
case against Lem Lewis, for man
slaughter and he was given the minU
muft) sentence of two years. The
killing occurred a few weeks ago on
the farm of R. L. Sowell near Kor
shaw. .
M. B. Munn, white, entered a plea
of guitly of violation of the prohibi
tion law, And was sentpneed to serve
tWeleve months, and after tho service
of three months the remainder ' of
the sentence to bo suspended* the de
fendant being given thirty days to ar

The grand jury was called together
again Thursday after having bedn
discharged to rejport on a oa?e. Benhie
Thompson was charged with assault
and battery with intent to kill. jHe
shot and woundeVl Charles Patterson,
another negro. He was tried within
about ten day after the commission
of the crime and sentenced to five |
years. Patterson was taken to the
hoipital f6r treatment but has since I
bean discharged. There can be no
coipplaint o? the delay ?of justice in
The ca*9 of J. C. Jordan, charge^
with attempted rape, was acquitted.
Jordan recently located in the town of
Kershaw and wafc conducting a garage ,
w.hen he waB arrested by the chief of
police there charged with the com
mission of the crime. Jordan was
defended by G. G. Alexander, of the
local bar, and W. H. Whitehead, who
is the mayor of Lake City. The ad
dress before the jury made by Mr.
Whitehead excited a number of very
favorable comments. The defendant
it is understood is well connetced and
the evidence before the jury was not
considered syflteient to justify a ver
dict of ^guilty. Jordan had been
drinking, it was alleged.
