OUR GREATEST CALAMITY

Camden and Kershaw County is
bowed in the deepest sorrow over the
greatest calamity that has ever oc
curred in this section? the catastro
phe at Cleveland school Thursday
night when seventy-seven precious
lives were lost as the result of
the burning of the school house. We
read of disasters that shock other
communities, without realizing what
they really mean, but when one
comes home to us and takes away
such a number of valuable people,?
friends with whom we delighted to
mingle,? then, ahvthert, the weight is
so great that we cannot stand the
shock in our own strengh but must
implore the mercies of Almighty
God to sustain us. We know one
thing, and that is we love our fellow
man and this frightful calamity has
drawn us even closer to them. We
thank Him for the grace and courage
and strength vouchsafed to us all to
bear the great sorrow that has sud
denly befallen our town and county.
And we are deeply grateful for the
many messages of sympathy?not a
mere expression of words, but a
sympathy coming from the very bot
tom of the hearts of the people of
the country even from beyond the
borders of our dear state. All
of the homes of our county are in
grief because ot the loss of lives, and
there are a number of homes bereft
of loved ones and no mere words can
portray the real tlepth of their grief,
but the assurance of friends' who
c^?ply sympathize with them will be
a beacon light in the gloom that over
hangs them. God bless and comfort
them, every one, and may a merciful
Providence spare us from another
such disaster.
THE RED CROSS.

The strongest commendation we
could give the Red Cross can be ex- 1
pressed in one sentence?God bless the
Red Cross. Within one hour after
they heard of the terrible catastrophe
at the Cleveland school house they
had a representative on his way to |
Camden to render whatever assistance
was needed and if permitted to do so
to take charge of the work of relief.
Mr. Carter Taylor arrived Saturday j
from Atlanta, Ga., and Sunday after- ,
noon met with a special committee in]
the voom of the Chamber of com- J
merce, and sated to them that the
Red Cross was* ready to assume
charge, the local committee to work
in conjunction with this splendid or
ganization. In a calamity such as
visited our county it is well to have
n trained leader to take charge for
no phase of the work will be over
looked and proper care will be taken
of each one. Sunday night in the
Methodist church Mr. Taylor stated
the work had been placed in their
hands, and he had wired for a leader
to come at once and the Red Cross
will remain with the work as long as
there is anything for them to do. He
referred especially to the 46 orphan
ed children, who will be cared for and
given just as good an education as
they might have obtained had they
not lost their parents.
There is no greater organization
in the country today for the relief of
the suffering than the Red Cross.
Its representatives are trained and
they go about their work in a care
ful* Bystematib way," and the good
they accomplish cannot bo estimated.
A BIGGER TASK.
Standing in the shadow of' a great
calamity, such as has befallen our
people, one feelB like giving up, so
hopeless and helpless do they feel as
the terrible picture is flashed in rap
id succession across the mind, but it
is a time to strike the braver blow,
for we must never give up. 'Certain
ly it makes the task bigger, but our
people will rise from the depths of
sorrow which has come upon them,
and set themselves to tho task of com
forting and helping the comfortless
and helpless. Strength will come to
the bereaved as they feel the touch of
sympathy and realize that into their
grief our hearts of sympathy travel.
Their loVed) one have not died in
vain. Let us alt turn our thoughts
to an All Wise Providence who guides
and protects us. Never give up!

TREES REQUIRE PROPER CARE

The 1 lack of care of home land
scape becomes most noticeable at this
season. In this statement I refer to
the care of trees on our lawns, says a
writer In the Pittsburgh Dispatch.
Many times we notice buckeye trees,
as well as many other species, with
the leaves all eaten off, alter which a
second crop of leaves appears only to
be killed by the frost This Is hard
on the llfo of the tree. The city has
spent a great deal of mone^ on the
planting and care of trees, while the
average citizen considers a tree a per
manent fixture of the house. A band
our town requires and can support,
of fly puper is sometimes put around
the trunk and does some good for a
short time, then becomes dry and use
less, whereas a band of cotton will last
a full Benson or even several seasons.
A band of cotton prevents worms from
attacking the tree, thereby keeping It
looking better longer. It Ms not "too
much trouble"' nor "too expensive."
The avernge person will Bpend much
more time on a few flowers, for which
I do not condemn them, but they last
only one season, while the trees that
should lust many years, die prema
turely from the lnek of a little atten
tion. There Is, of course, much more
work to make a tree last Its maximum
life, but n little attention adds many
years to Its existence.

How to Plant Fruit Treea.
To plant fruit trees Instead of shade
trees It Is first necessary to give the
trees plenty of room. Two perfect
trees will fill the back yard of a BO
foot lot, ond any other trees In that
apace will crowd them. One must
be prepared to give more care to fruit
.Jrees than to shade trees, and spray
ing and pruning a specimen 2(1 feet
high is quite a Job. Pear and cherry
treea need less attention than apples,
but a good yield of fruit requires not
lesrf than three sprayings In a season,
and sometimes more than that. The
more vigorous shade trees will need
no spraying at all, unless attacked by
an unusunl Insect Invasion.
There la little doubt that the trou
ble given to mature fruit trees Is well
repaid by their production, and there
Is no doubt whatever that fruit can
be produced in back ynrds equal In
qunllty to any on enrth and far supe
rior to that obtained In the markets,
because It con be ripened on the tree
and eaten when Just right.

fessions in The City of Camden* 8.
C., For the Year From May 1, iy23
to May 1, 1924.
Be it ordained by the Mayor and
'Counciimen of the uity of <Jamuon, in
Council assembled and by the author
ity of the same:
, Section 1. Every person, firm,!
company, or corporation engaged on!
May 1, 1923 in any calling, business,!
profession ofr occupation in whole or'
in part within the City of Camden)
as may be hereinafter specified, shall i
obtain during the month ol May,
1923, a license therefor in the man-!
ner herinafter prescribed. Every
person, firm, company or corporation
commencing business in said city on
or after the first day of May, 1923,
snail in a like manner obtain a li
cense therefor before entering upon
such calling, business, profession or
occupation as is hereinafter specified.1
Section 2. Every person, firm,
company, or corporation engaged inf >
or intending to engage in any cahnig, 1
business, profession or occupation,
for which a license is required, shall <
apply to the Clerk and Treasurer of,
the City of Camden for the same? l
by whom all such licenses shall be is
sued, and shall, at the time of ap-l
plying, make and sign a written I
statement under oath, and file it with
the said Clerk and Treasurer, setting
forth: First, His, her or its name
or style, the name of the persona
constituting such firm or company.
Second. Tne calling, business, pro
fession or occupation for which li
cense is required. Third. The
place where such calling, business,
prolession or occupation is to be car
ried on; the amount of capital in
vested, or the gross annual income.
Parties in business on the first of
May, shall make such application for
| hew license and file such written
statement before May 21st.
Section 3. A penalty of fifteen
per cent shall be added to all license
which are not paid during the month
of May, 1923, except such as may
become due after that time. Pro
vided, however, that immediate pay
ment may be required in each and
every case at the discretion of the
said Clerk and Treasurer*; and the
foregoing provision shall in no wise
stay or hinder action to enforce im
mediate payment; which tax and pen
alty shall be recovered in the manner
hereinafter prescribed, and if ?nv
person, firm, company or corpora
tion required so to do by the terms
of this ordinance shall refuse or neg
lect to make out and deliver to the
Clerk and Treasurer of the City of
Camden, on or before the time here
in required, the statement provided
ior by Sec. 2 of this ordinance, or
shall make a false statement, or
shall refuse to' take and subscribe an
oath or affirmation as to the truth of
such bthvement, or any part there
of; or from any cause shall fail to
v.ake out such license as may be re
luirt d by this ordinance, the said
Clerk and Treasurer shall report the
case to the Mayor, who shall pro
ceed to ascertain as nearly as poss
ble, the business of such person,
firm, company or corporation, for
which he, she or it may be liable to a
license tax therefor, and in case of
default for the purpose of such in
vestigation; the said pierk and
Treasurer shall notify the person,
firms, companies or corporations in
default to appear before the Mayor
at his office? at a time stated in said
notice; and also such witnesses as
the Mayor may desire to examine.
The witnesses called as aforesaid
shall be examined by the Mayor, un
der oath or affirmation, touching the
nature of the business of such party;
and everything which , may e
vince the amount of license tax for
which such party shall be liable.
From the information thus acquir
ed the Mayor shall find and assess
the amount of license tax due by
such party whether he, she or it at
tended the investigation or not*; and
shall add thereto a penalty of fifteen
per cent, thereof and should such li
cense tax and penalty be not paid
within five, days thereafter, the
3aid Clerk and Treasurer shall, issue
an execution thereof under hit hand
and the seal of the City of Camden,
directed to the cheif of police of the
City of Camden, or the Sheriff of
Kc shuw County, in Baid State and
the said Chief of Police or Shoriff
shall proceed to collect the said li
cense tax and penalty, by levy and
sale of real or personal property, as
now provided by law for the collection
of taxes, together with an addition
al five per cent of the whole amount,
which shall be the Sheriff's or Chief
jf Polico's compensation for making
such collection, in addition to one
lollar for making such levy, which
shall be paid by delinquent without
t-ntry or mileage fees; provided, how
sver, that any person or corporation
shall have the right of appeal to the
City Council of Camden (notice of
such appeal having been given to the
Clerk and Treasurer within five days
from the time of which such assess
ment of license and penalty shall
have beer made) and upon hearing
Clerk and Tresaurer within five days
from the time of which such assess
ment of license and penalty shall
have been made) and upon hearing
such appeal, the said Council sha*l
make such order therein as it shall
deem just and proper; and provided
further, that in lieu of the remedy
above set forth to enforce payment,
an action or actions may be brought
in any court of competent jurisdict
ion, for the recovery of such license
tax and penalties. And provided
further that any person, firm, com
pany Or corporation who shall carry
on, or attempt to carry on any call
ing, business, profession or occupat
ion without a license as herein re
quired, or who shall neglect or re
fuse to give the information requir
ed or to answer such questions as
may be required, ot who shall fail
to attend before the Mayor to be
examined by him when so required,
provided in Section 2 and 3 of
this ordinance may be deemed guilty
of a violation thereof before the Mun
icpal Court and ? may be fined not
more than One Hundred Dollars, or
