A GREAT PRESIDENT.
tf.\y President Wilson made an address
;before"*the press club in New York ?
last weeek which revealed the rea1
man he is perhaps stronger than
any recent public utterance from
him. To read his address one can
almost feel the throbbing of a great
heart absorbed in the varied and
complying interests of a great
nation like ours. He declares he
. will not make war until other Jsteps
v fall. ?He is doing what he can to
prevent war as far as he can, and
at the same time maintain the hon
,or of America. He made it plain
that he was not the servant of those
Who wish to enhance the value of
their Mexican investments, but that
he is the sevant of the rank and file
of the people of the United States.
He said he wanted them to know
' ' how fully he realizes whose servant
he is. He said that he got a great
many letters from influential and
important men, and he also got a
great many from humble men, and
they all contained but one prayer:
"Mr. President, do not allow any
body to persuade you that the peo
ple of this country want war.
Every sentiment breathed pa
triotism. Surely this conntry has
a great president, and we devoutly
hope that he may be reelected for a
? second term.
The members of the negro regi
ment who were taken prisoners
have been released. Carranza evi
eently thought it best to yield to the
' demands of this government. But
he seems to be a thoroughly unreli
^ . able man, and is bent on making
trouble. It is doubtful whether or
4 not he has the respect and confi
dence of his own people- He cet*
^ thinly appears not to desferve their,
/confidence, *md this country surety..
has none in him.
? ??
you ' thought of it? The
campaign party is canvassing
the State right along. The war
clouds obscured to some extent in
terest In the campaign, but it is
going on just the same.
