AND
COUNTY SCHOOL FAIR,
Friday, March 26th, 1915.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF CONTESTS.
The Declamation and Recitation Contests: O^e boy and one
girl from each rural school, and one boy *nd one girl from each
town school, will be allowed to enter this contest. Four prizes
will be given as the town and rural school boys and girls will be
judged separately.
NOTE: All schools having three teachers or more will be
considered as town schools. All consisting of two and one
teachers will be considered rural schools.
LITERARY CONTESTS
Arithmetic Content ? For thirJ and fourth grade chilJren| a
multiplication taole m itch will be held. Each school may enter
its best pupil in this work. 1 fie child will be given only one
answer during the match.
For pupils of the 5th, 6th and 7th grades a fifteen minutes
contest ill be held, in addition; substraction, multiplication and
division. This con'.est will be conducted somewhat as it was
last year? each contestant will write name, age, grade and
name ol school on the back of the paper, and at a given signal
turn it over and begin work. As the papers are finished the
j idges will take them up anJ number in order of receipt. All
papers must be given in at thr end of fifteen minutes These
contents are designed to stimulate speed and accuracy. Each
school may enter one pupil for eacn of these contests.
7 est in Composition ? Boys and girls of the 8th, 9th and 10th
grades m-iy enter the composition contest. The subject will be
selected from the following list of subjects. The p-pers must
b.-* handed in at the end of thirty minutes. The cpnte^tants v\ ill
be furnished paper and pencil. Each school can enter only one
pupil:
Topics ? 1. The Early American Indian.
2. The Life of the Man I Like Best in History.
3. 1 he Book that 1 Like Best.
4. "The Courtship ot Miles Standish."
5. The Present European War.
6. The Life ot Wade Hampton.
NOTE: Information on the first and second subjects may be
found in Thompson's United States History. On the sixth
there is information in White's "The Making of South Caroli
na." These topics may be used by the pupils so that the
teacher may select her best writer to represent the school,
Spelling Contest. ? One pupil from each school of the fifth,
sixth and seventh grades may enter in the spelling contest.
Writing and CMap T>rawing ? On account of the lack of a
suitable place these contests will not be held on Field Day, but
each teacher having pupils who wish to compete will h Id the
contest at her own school on the Friday before Field Day. She
will then select the two best in each contest and send in at
once to the Rural Srhool Supervisor, Camden, S C., B>x 327,
A committee will decide on the best and make the announce
ment on Field Day.
Writing. ? There will be two contests in writing. All pupils
who are in school for their first year may enter the first. The
teacher may put the folio v ing short sentences on the board and
have the contestants copy each twice:
"Mamma can see Rover,"
"I like to see the big rabbit "
"My name is ."
"I go to school at ."
In the second test pupils of the 7th to 10th grades may write
from dictation a short paragraph.
CMap Drawing. ? Pupils of the 4th and 5th grades may draw
maps of Sou'h Carolina, locating the principal cities and rivers.
Children of the 6th and 7th grades may draw maps of North
America showing the political divisions, also the capital of
each and the largest rivers.
Pupils of 8-10 grades may draw map^ of Europe, indicating
the countries now engaged in war, also locating the capital of
each country and the large rivers.
NOTE: This work must be entirely free hand and done from
memory. The teacher may assist her pupils during the prac
ticejw jrk, but during the contest they are to receive no help.
The writing and map drawing papers must be in not later than
Wednesday before Field Day so that the judges will have am
ple timo.
SCHOOL PARADE.
After the literary part of the day is finished all the schools
will form in line and march to the F^ir Grounds where the Ath
letic events will take place. Each school will carry a banner
wiih the name of the school on it, beginning with the schools of
district No, i, and on through th*? list of Districts. Every boy
and girl in the schools is invited to go in .this parade. It is
hoped that we can make arrangements for music to march by.
Prizes will be awarded in each of the above contests, and for
the sc^ X)1 showing the largest percentage of its enrollment in
the parade, A list of all prizes will be announced later.
ATHLETIC EVENTS.
The following Athletic Events will be held:
1. 50 yard dash for girls 6, 7 or 8 years of age,
2. 100 yard dash for girls 9, 10, 11, 12 years of age.
3. 40 yard dash for boys 6, 7 or 8 years of age.
4. 25 yard sack race for boys and girls 8-1 1 years.
5. 25 yard wheel bariow race for boys 9-12 years.
6. 50 yard apple relay race for girls 12-15 years.
7. 25 yard potato race for girls 6-9 years,
8. 200 yard dash for boys 12-1$ years.
9. 1-2 mile relay race for boys over 15 years of age.
10. Running broad jump for boys 12-14 years.
11. Running high jump for boys 12-14 years.
12. Running broad jump for boys 15-18 years.
13. Running high jump for boys 15-18 years.
5 'egged race for boys and girls 8-12 years.
1 5, Base ball throwing for girls 10-1 5 years.
16. Base ball throwing for boys 10-15 years.
Prizes will be awarded in each of these evtnts.
NOTB. ? For the sack race each contestant will have a crocus
sack or of some Dther thick material about two and a half feet
wide. 1 he child will stanJ in the sack and hold it up around
the waist while running.
The wheel-barrow race will be run as it was last year. Two
boys from each school may enter, one boy walking on his hands
white the other boy holds his legs, thus resembling a wheel
barrow.
For the apple relay race an apple will be cut in eight pieces
and placed at regular intervals in the 50 yards spa:e. As each
contestant comes to the 1-8 apple she must sit down and eat it,
then on to the next piece until the race is finished.
Two tx>ys or two girl* may be entered in the $ legged race.
In the potato race about eight potatoes w.ll ^e pi jed at re;u
lar intervals The contestant must p tk up each potitu as she
comes to it and carry it back to a b.iskrt frum where she > t a r t
ed and continue thus urtil all the potatoes are in ihe basket.
