THE FARMER'S DILEMMA.
With the many ideas advanced
tor affording relief to the farmer, he
is certainly in a dilemma The
meeting held in the court house in
Camden was against the cotton
warehouse idea advanced by Sena
tor McLxurin, and favored a reduc
tion of acreage to seven acres per
work animal. The meeting would
have a measure of this kind enacted
by Jaw. Then there are some who
in desperation sa> cut out the en

are striking the nail on the head if
we have already more cotton than
the world needs for two years, We
notice -that Dr. Wade Stackhouse,
a fer his return from Texas and
New Orleans, has come out square
ly in favor of passing up the entire
cotton crop for next year, and fur
nished some figures to show the im
mense gain it would be to the far
mers in dollars by doing this.
We do not know which of these
I ideas would he best, but are inclined
to the one that would eliminate cot
ton for a year. But then that is our
money crop and can we do this?

We do not take to the idea of

shall plant. This should not be
necessary.. If he says-that it costs
ten cents to make cotton and can
on,y get seven cents for It, he is ex
ceedingly unwise, to put it mildly
to plant cotton, but if he wants to
continue to lose three cents a pound
on ail the otton he can raise, why
we think that he should hay that
privilege. His personal rights should
not be interfered with, should they f
But maybe this will be best. If it
meets with the approval of the law
makers and auits the faimers, we
have no kick coming.

THE PAYMENT OF TAXES.
The tax books for the collection
of state and county taxes will open
on the 15th of October. It is sate
to i?ay that not many will pay their
taxes just at this time, but in our
opinion it would be very unwise for
the legislature, in its extraordinary
session, which convenes today, to
extend ~lhe time, Taxes can be
p?id any time up to the first of Jan
uary without the penalty being ad*
ded. After the first of January one
per cent, is added, and in February
a fer cent, is added, and seven per
cent, <fter the first of March. To
postpone the time for the payment
of taxes would seriously interfere
with the business of the county.
No enterprise c-f the county would
suffer more than our public schools.

for thfelr support, aaiaries or teach
ers must be paid. There is never
enough money carried over to run
the schools any length of time.
A few of the districts have enough
cash balance to meet their needs
for a monrh or so, but the majority
have not.
? To postpone the payment of tax
es would mean that all of the corpo
rations that pay a big part ot our
tax, would hold off and take advan
tage of the extension. They pay
ju<t before the penalty is added any
way as we under stand, and they
can pay the first of January just as
well as six months or a year later. |
So far as *e know they could pay |
at any time, especially the ra.lroads, '
telegraph, telephone and express
companies, there are also a num- .
ber of large Individual taxpayers
who pay by the first of January,
but who would hold off if the time
was extended. The small taxpayer
could manage no douot to get up
his taxes by the first of January. I
It the taxe? are not paid the
schools cannot run unless the teach
ers work on credit and no one wish*
es this state ot affairs to occur. It
will be a patriotic duty for those
who can to pay their taxes this year |
just as early at they possibly can.
