CAMDEN, S, C., Sept. ist, 1914 SENATOR smith s election. The nomination last Tuesday of Senator E. D. Smith to succeed himself, was not only a victory for himself but especially was it a vic tory for the farmers and for the State of South Carolina. Just at this particular time it would have been unfortunate to have lost his services in the senate. Cotton has been his hobby for a number of years, ana now with the effects of the European war it will take well directed efforts to save the farmers from the loss of millions of dollars in marketing the present crop of cotton, and as Senator Smith is a ^staunch friend of the farmers, is a | farmer himself, it is perfectly na tural that he will unite his efforts with other intelligent and patriotic men to help bring about such legis lation as will redound to their good. South Carolina wjth all of the cot ton growing states, has a serious prob.em to solve. Senator Smith will do his part to help solve these problems. Passion and prejudice has held full sway in South Carolina tor some time. But it cannot be charged to Senator Smith - that he has brought about this unfortunate condition. The progress of our state would be impeded by a continuance of such a state of affairs, and we feel confident that Senator Smith will do his full part in getting our people together. Two distinct factions were in evidence during the cam paign which is nosv practically closed. These factions should get together and st.-y together U lited we stand, divided we fall. It be hooves every good citizen, regard ies? to which faction he belonged, to lay aside all passion and preju dice and work for the common goud of South Corolina. We cannot af ford for our grand old state to suffe. in such a way. A non -factions spirit should possess the heart of every true citizen. The business and professional men in the towns .and cities have united with the far mers in winning a signal victory for South Corolina. Let every true South Carolinian unite their hearts and minds in one grand purpose for the betterment and happiness of her citizens, a state second "to none in the union for its glorious history 1 and achievements in the past. ^ Andrew J. Bethea, who has aifine chance ot election for Lieutenant Governor has issued the following statement: I am deeply grateful to the people of South Carolina for the magnificent vote given roe on Tuesday. I regard my handsome vote as an en dorsement of that position. We have heard quite a number express their regret that Robert A. Cooler did not get in tl^e second race for Governor since ; Kershaw county's gifted son was left out, but still this will not lessen the vote for Richar J I. Manning next Tues day. He is an exceptionally high type of gentleman, and will make a governor that the old state will be proud of. Mr. Manning is a man of affairs, and ranks among the yery best business men of the state. His large interests in farming naturally will make him an acceptable Goverr nor, for he knows what the farmers have to contend with, is one him self and can be of gteat service in directing the ship of state. He will steer her clear of the breakers His election next Tuesday is as reason ably certain as anything could well be. Capt. M. L. Smith, one of our coun ty candidates for Governor failed of election, as we believe, largely because he was sacrificed by those who thought that concentration and elimination was the thing to do in the election last Tuesday. The re sults, however, of the election did pot bear out this idea. Only one of the administration ' candidates could have gotten jn the seand race but the attacks made upon Capt. Smith and several of the oiher can didates had the effect of creating a panicy feeling, and as a result, he was left out. He came within a a very few votes, however, of car rying his county over the ten other candidates, and was very well sup ported in a number of counties of the state.
