This term of court haB boeu a remarkable one for the dispatch of business, having in three days disposed of, by trial by jury, more cases than at any previous term in six days. There was a large number present, and a delightful dtiy was enjoyed by all. Mr. Newton Kel ly called the meeting to order and In troduced Mr. B. Harris, of Anderson, President of the State Farmers Union, who made a. very interesting and in structive address. If there were any present who were not Farmers Union men after hearing his address we do not see how they could help becoming Interested In so helpful and worthy an organization. Mr. P. T. Bruce, who is tho presi dent of the County Union, was also f>res?nt and mado a very earnest and natructivo address, in faotono of the best we have ever heard him make, and It showed Very dearly that he had glvon much thought to the work of the Union. Knapp in charge of the Bureau of Plant Industry as Held agent of this work. Dr. Knapp's reputation up a scienti fic agriculturist and platform orator is hardly equalled by that of any man on (be American continent. All who at tend the meeting-may rest assured that in this address alone there will be af forded full 'compensation for all the pains incurred in attendance, eveu thohgb they have to come long dis tances. It will be instructive and in spiring and entertalng In the highest degree, we may safely predict. It has been my good fortune to hear Dr. Knapp, under the hlgest expectations of pleasure and profit, when he not onty filled the measure of these expec tations, but overflowed it. Besides Dr. Knapp, there will be several speakers of distintlon. Among others we have luvitod the presence of two experts from the Department of Ajploulture to talk on cattle and fruit raising. Musicians will be there, who with instrument and voices, will contribute finely to the occasion. Dr. Knapp is to have as much of the morning peroid as he desires, com mencing his address at 11:30 The hour set this late in ihe day that those coming by rail or from Ion*; distances by pri vate conveyance, may all reach there in time to hoar the whole of his address There will be a recess for dinner. The basket picnic arrangement has been decided upon. The grounds are remarkably well adapted for pleasant dinners to be had in groups. For be sides the numerous umbrageous oake in the lawn and groves, there are sev eral lanes, two hundred yards long, of unbroken shade, afforditg ample accomodations for large or small as semblages of families or friends. The water from the springs on the school-grounds is of the very best quality and easily obtained for man or beast. In the event of raiu, the large school building will comfortably shelter many hundreds of people Taken all in all, we doubt if such attractive and excellent picnic grounds can bo found in South Carolina, as those which th6 public is now invited to come and thereto seethe exceeding ly important work of asfricutural and horticutural instruction in rural schools, Inaugurated by the great National Department of Agriculture, for the betterment of country life, in this state, for all the future genera tions. The appropriateness of having tho work of inaugaratlon on the anniver sary of Gen. Sumter's birth is appar ent, and especially fortunate that it occurs at a suitable season of the year for the farmers to attrnd to give crop ostlmates and enter upon plans for the next year's operations. As we are gathered together in signt of the hand some monument placed on Gen. Sum ter's grave by the General Assembly of South Carolina, all present will no doubt be reminded that If Gen. Myers, of Congaree, preach ed in the Presbyterian church here yester day morning at 11 o'clock and again at night at 8:30 o'clock. Mr. Myers was formerly pastor of Pleasant Hill and Har mony Baptist churches In this section and is a minister of marked ability. He Is very popular with his numerous friends here. We regret to learn that Mr. Slduey Barfield has beed quite sick with fever. He is some better now. We desire to call special attention to the advertisement of Mr. T. M. Clyburn, which appears in this Issue of the Messen er. State Baseball League between Sumter and Orangeburg. Mr D. W. Gardner and Ills son. Mr E E Gardner, went to Mayesvllle on Friday to spend three or four days with relatives.
