JtJFollowlng closely upon the fioods in the west, the disastrous forest fires in the north, the terrific cy clone in Georgia, comes a great ca lamity within the borders of our own state. On Saturday morning the Clifton Mills and the Pacolet Mills near Spartanburg, were washed out of existence, as the result of a clou^ barst in the mountains. The wateis rose in a very brief space of tr ie to over 40 feet. The reports pub lished yesterday, places the death lossess at 80, and the value of prop erty destroyed at hot less than three and a half millions of dollars. The governor has issued an ap peal to the people of the State foi help. 500 families are homeless and 4000 people are out of^employment. The disaster is without a parallel in this state. Help for the sufferer is needed, and whatever is done foi them should be done qu:ckly. Tilt citizens of Camden sent a contribu tion last night of about $300. Othei contributions will be forwarder promptly. Don't wait for the com mittee to call upon you, but hunt either of them up, or leave youi contributions at The Messenge: office and we will be glad to hand it to the'eommittee for you. The com mittee ^consists of Messrs. C. J Shannon, W. J. P. Weeks, A. D. Kennedy, Rev. W. W. Mills am Dr. John W. Corbett. Bethune Budget. Bethune, June 8. ? We have tia*. plenty of rain, in fact it Gained ev ery day last week, and very littU work could be done on the farm: and grass is getting to be plentifu though it is small yet. Accordin; to the old saying that if it rains tlv first day of a month there will bi plenty rain that month if that b* true we will have plenty this month Some of the farmers have not plantc\ their bottom land yet, and if it keep, raining they can not plant, and tha what has been planted will b? drowned. But we ought to be thank ful that we have had good rains am have had no destructive floods lik?. the one that they had on the Paco let River in Spartanburg County that destroyed so much propert) and lives at Glendale, Clifton, aiu Pacolet. We are sorry to hear ol such calamities, but I reckon thi people of the State, and country a", ^arge, will help those unfortunate Human kindness and sym Peo^^ke great helps to those it.
