CAMDEN, S. C . May 25th, 1897.
HEATH OF St VUOK F.AKLE.
Hon. Joseph H Earle, jaoior Uni
ted States Senator from Sunth Caro
lino, departed this life at bis home
in Greenville on the 20th of May of
Bright'* disease. after an illneas uf
abont six we*?ks. 15 v Ibie bad event,
the State BtiBtaius a loan tbat canuct
well be repaired. On April 30tb,
J udge Earle reached bin fiftieth birth
day, he having been bora iu Green
ville April 30i h, 1847 A private sol
dier in the Confederate Army while
yet a boy, be knew what were tbe
hardships of those who served iu the
raukt). Tbe war over. he completed
t it education at Furman University
!Ju next taught school and Btndied
law iu 18M About thi? time, he
married bis cousin, Mins Anna Earle,
and settled at Anderson, S. C , where
ho pr otioed his p.ofesfcion until
1 87f>. when be removed to Sumter,
\vb?re be became the partner of Col.
J 'tines D Blauding. Ho rose rapidly
it) bis profeasioo, and was soou recog
ui'..vl as one of the foremost lawyei8
of the State Later lie praotijed
with R O Pnrdy, Esq, under tbe
firm nauio of Eirle & Pnrdy. In
1878, he was elected to tbe House of
ftepresontatives, wbore be served one
term. He was afterwards elected
Souator from bis county; and. in 188G,
he was nomiuated and elected Attor
noy General of the State. In 1888
lie declined to become a candidate
before tbe Democratic State Conven
tion for Governor, although the nom>
uution was practically assured, on
tha ground that be bad, at a time
when he did not suppose that In*
would be urged for that position,
staled tbat he would not be a candi
date for the otttoe, but would be oon
tent to be r -elected to tbe position
of Attorney General.
Iu 1890, feeliDi? that some oue
should defend the administration of
which he was a member from tbe
charges made against it, be became a
oftudidate for Governor, and oan
vassed the State against Capt. B. ft.
Tillman. He knew from the first
that he was doomed to defeat; but,
undaunted, bo fought to the end, and
came out with tbe respect of his an
tagonist, Bud tbe good will and con
fidence of tbe people. Resuming the
practice of the law, he returned to his
nativo county, and located in Green
ville. In the winter of 189-1-5, he
waB elected Jndge of the 8th Cirouit,
succeeding Hon J. J. Norton. In
189G, bo entered tbe race for United
Statoa Senator, bis competitors be
iug Gov. John Gary Evans and Hon.
John T. Dunoon. The canvass will
be remembered as one of the most,
exciting and bitter in the annals of
the State. From first to last, Judge
Earle bore himself with great dig
nity and ability. Iu the second pri
mary, he was chosen over Gov.
Evans to succeed Hou. J. L. M^Irby
in tho U. S. Senate. On March 4th ?
lees than throe months ago? he took
Lis seat in that august tribunal. He
had reached the goal of his ambition,
bnt he had not yet shown, an he
would soon have done, how fitted and
how worthy* he wan to be there
Iu n (ow weeks, he wan stricken
down by what proved to be his
lost illness. Returning by the ad
vice of his physician to his home in
' Greenville, he wae nursed by kind
friends and relatives until the end.
Judge Earle was a m?rabor of tbe
Baptist ohurc.h. und died trusting in
tbe promises of his Savior.
Senator Earle was no common man.
from his boyhood lie was a foroeful
ohnraoter. Ansu ro in demeanor, and
seemingly distant, he was always most
courteous, and bound his friends to
him by the charm of his manner, and
the loyalty of his nature. Audaciously
bold and absolutely true, there was
no wonder he won and kept the hoarts
of the people. Of him itoan be said
tbat wherever placed and in all the
relations of life, Joseph H. Earle J
measured up to the full standard of a
lofty mauhood.

Mr. Editor: Ab I was bom and
raised over in this "Lost Territory," and
and nevtr before have attempted to
write anything for the press, I thought
1 would scratch a few lines for the
grand old Messenger, so its many
readers may know that some of ub are
still living and getting along some how.
Crops are doing very well. Cotton
Is generally small on account of the
continual cold weather, but it is im
proving ><nue since the cold snap
passed o:f. The early corn crop is only
tolerably g ?ud. The oats crop is very
good so far as I have been ablr to see
something k^ovo the average crop. 1
think.
The health of the community is very
good at this time. We are glad to note
that Mrs. J. S. Hammond is very much
improved under the skillful treatment
of l)r. W. J. Dunn, one of Camden's
popular and wide-awake young physi
cians.
ltev. S. D. Bailey preached a very in
teresting sermont at St. John's church
on last Sunday, at 4 o'clock p. tn. from
Ex. 12:23.
The Kershaw Literary Soclotj met at
St. John's school house on Monday
night last, and had a very interesting
meeting. We were honored with the
presence of Hers. S I). Bailey and U.
M. Robertson, of the Wateree circuit.
We had several recitations from the
little girls and boys of the society, one
dialogue by two little girls whleh was
very entertaining. Tne next on the
programme was the debate. The sub
ject was.'itesolved. that money is worth
more to man than honor." I will say
nothing about the afllrmative side, but
the negative was ably and houorably
.represented by Hev . 8. I). Bailey and
Hon. J. N. Junes. With the assistance
of liev. B. M. ltobertaon, L. W. McCaa
and Miss Jesslo Graham aa a deciding
courrnlttee, it looks reaaonablothal they
might have gotton the persimmon
which thev dia. The society will meet
again on June 3rd, 8 p.m. The subject
for discussion will be, "Resolved, that
Columbus deaeryea more honor for dis
covering America than Washington
for defending it." ,
The Mormons swarmed in our neigh
borhood some wher^. When last seen i
they were, going in the direction of
Camden. I haven't heard whether they
were hived by any body or not. Two
of them tried to get in my gum, but as
their doctrine and the doctrine of their
King diil not agree with the doctrine
that we have called the Hible the Book
of Lord of Lords and King of Kings, i
1 did not hive them. They tried sev I
f.al of my neighbor's gums the
same night but (ailed. I would like
to he?r from "l'uer" |as they have been
going in that direction for Bome time.
knowing ll 1 111 Ho wull, UK I (lo and
knowing his love lor Mormanism, 1
fear he has ^been hiving them.
Show up your colors. Bro. "l'uer,"
whenever you deny the f lith let ub know
it like a num.
As this is my tlrst scribbling for the
press, 1 will close for fear of worrying
the Editor's patience with stuff aa he
might call it. If this is not returned I
will come ttgaln soon and try to im
prove on the first.
Beat wishes to the Editor and his
paper. i
