THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIA HON
It seems that our editorial with
reference to a fire alarm system in
last week's issue was misunderstoo
by a correspondent who replies in this
> issue.
We did not mean that a fire alarm i
system would take the place of an
hour Sunday telephone service. Ar
far as the Sunday service fa concert |
ed we feel sure we can get it by asking
for it. A -member of council said
today that they had not used tongues
or backbone to get this service because
no one had mentioned it to the^r
They thought the people were satis
fied with the Sunday houm. How cc
they know what is wanted unites the;
are told?
There is certainly no good reason
wh(y we should not have the all da:
Sunday telephone service therefore
we are for it if our citizens want it.
However, we still insist that we need
a more efficient fire alarm system and
we understasd that before our previous
editorial was written the Council had
instructed the fire chief to get some
data on cost of equipment, etc. Correspondent
in discussing the automatic
alarm system points out that fool
would give us trouble with falsi
alarms. This may be true, but wc
have to deal with fools in every other
department of our city government,
so why let them keep us from having
an efficient fire department. Wouh
it be wise not to have policemen be
cause a boy, around a corner yelled
"police" and ran?
\Ve won't try to discuss the cost of
a system because we don't know any.
thing about it but if the cost is anything
like "reasonable" and if e
system can be gotten to meet the I
needs of a volunteer fire departmen
we belive that our Council can b
trusted to do the wise thing in the
matter.
