THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOC1A TION I
As we do not publish anonymous 1
letters, we cannot publish one receiv- 1
ed this week headed "Dcnatuerd '
AlcohuT" however, we understand
from those in position to know, tl
the contents of the letter stating tha'
numbers of men in and near town
trink this poison as a beverage
true. A doctor told us today that he
had recently had two cases of blindness
as the result of drinking' dona
tured alcohol. Surely something
should be done to control the promiscuous
handling of this drug.
o
We are printing elsewhere in this
issue a letter rrom a cuizen caiuug
attention to the lack of telephone
service during Sunday hours on last |
Sunday being responsible in part for
the loss of property amounting to
$10,000 and calling attention to the
fact that we could have this service
by insisting that the telephone company
give it to us.
Instead of advocating the Sunday
all day service, we want to urge the
Council to install an adequate fire
alarm system. It seems to us it it
about as necessary to have an efficier.
alarm system as to have the equipment
we have now. What is the use
of having a fast truck to get to fires
quickly if a lot of time is lost in finding
out where to go. Only a short
time ago the truck went in the opr
site direction from the fire because
the driver misunderstood the name
of the owner of the home.
We have too much invested in fire
fighting equipment to afford to hur'
its efficiency by trusting to smoke
and our telephone system to t.eil fch;
location of the fire.
o
Washington, D. C.?The President
scorns to have taken a leaf from the
back of a certain Congressman who
used to represent a Missouri District
in years gone by. Whenever any man
became annoying with his opposition
to the Congressman, this Member got
the fellow a job?a job good enough
to put him out of the fight. He didn't
believe in rewarding his friends so
much as in pensioning his enimies.
President Harding has so maueuverA/1

tor Kenyon to take United States
Judgeship out in Iowa?which removes
one of the leaders of the Farm
Bloc in the Senate. It will be interesting
to watch the melting away of
that same Farm Bloc under the seductive
influence of life-long appointments.
Most men are so uncertain
as to their political future that they
are easily caught by the life-tenure
feature of the job. Kenyon will secure
the place long held by Judc
WPer I. Smith. Smith was a conrpfcious
and growing figure in Congress
when he was given the Judge
ship; he has hardly been heard of
since. So it will be with Kenyon
after a few months he will have to
fall from a tenth-story window 01
ake the Presidency of a base \<r
league to get his name in the papers,
but he will have a life-long job.
Another good man gone wrong, but
It gives the Democrats and Progrcs
sives of Iowa a chance to get togetheand
select his successor. Amalgamation
is the only logical thing for
these two bodies of voters seeking
the same end?the defeat of the reactionary
element now in the Republican
saddle.
The name of Harold IX Wilson will
go down in history as the n.an who
broke np the big Republican State
banquet at the Quincy House in Boston
by confiscating the liquor. "HereV
to the Grand Old Party, boys?drin'
'er dbwn." No man was ever more
viciously attacked than has been thi
same Wilson by the Republicans of
Massachusetts, for simply doing hi- j
sworn duty under the law and his i
oath of office unless it was another'
Wilson who got his mail at No. 160*
Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D
C., for eight years of unc> empire
prosperity. And, by the way, a Farm
Bloc in the Senate was not needed in
those days to protect the farmer in
his rights.
Speaking of the Ami-lynching Act
recently passed bv the House. M
Johnson of Mississippi, pr'nted in tb
Corgre;sional Pecord an ex'ract *'n
the Kansas City Star, a Republican,
newspaper, with reference t" ihr j
Kansas State anti-lynching law. The I
Star says: "Kansas towns are find-i
ing the State's anti-mob law a costly]
statute. Kansas City, Kansas, has
euits pending against the city now.
totaling $949.97$. Twentv-aix of
these are the result of trouble in Iiio 1
packing house strike. The suits range j
from 5 to $2.r?,000. Independence. Kan. i
has had judgments returned again=ij
it for ?37.Z.?U ana otner suns me ?:u-|
pending as a result of a race-war outbreak
there." Strange that sn->?
race-wars occur in Northern Republi- ;
can States.
The Anti-lynching Act provides that
the County in which the lync hir.g occurs
shall be fined $10,000, which!
shall go to the family of the lata- ;
lamented negro brute, while not binc
'? n*>id to the poor victim of his bos--;
tiality. This is a fair sample of Hepublican
legislation. Dyer, the author)
of this bill, had a district containing
many thousands of negroes when ! ? !;
wTote the bill, but it looks like he';
will have to run in the State at largei,
next November, because of ihe tech
nical position of the attempt to ieiistriet
Missouri, whereupon the rur.t!
voter will get a chauce at Bre'r Dyer
He will carry a heavy handicap a:
the odds will he greatly against hir.i
When the Anti-lynching Act comes
up in the Senate, it would be just like
Pat Harrison to move to almond tht
u'tle so that it will read: "An Act
xmimitting an assault on the C'onsti:ution
of the I'nited Slates."

Thedford's Black-Draught Highly
Recommended by a Tennessee
Grocer for Troubles Resulting
from Torpid
Liver.
East Nashville, Tenn.? The efficiency
of Thedford's Elack-Draught, the
genuine, herb, liver medicine, is
vouched for by Mr. TV. N. Tarsons, a
grocer of this city. "It Is without
doubt the best liver medicine, and I
don't believe I could get along without
it. I take it for sour stomach, headache,
bad livor, indigestion, and all
other troubles that are the result of
a torpid liver.
"I have known and used it for years,
and can and do highly recommend it
to every one. I won't go to bed without
it in the house. It will do all it
claims to do. I can't say enough for
ft"
Many other men and women throughout
the country have found BlackDraught
just as Mr Parsons describes
?valuable in regulating the liver to
its normal functions, and in cleansing
the bowels of impurities.
Thedford's Black-Draught liver medicine
is the original and only genuine.
Accept no Imitations or substitutes.
Always ask for Thedford's. ejj
