\ Mr. W. j7 Tiller, the County Agent,
says the fanners of C'nesterfield are
taking more steps toward fighting the
boll weevil than any county in the
State.
It looks as if our farmers are at
last beginning to read and take advice
from people who have experient
ed the troubles we are facing. This
is very encouraging and we feel ttu
the battle is half won when we realize
what we are up against.
However, every farmer should take
advantage of every opportunity to heai
more of the boll weevil and of experts
plans to combat the menace. On
Thursday night, Jan. 26th at 8 o'clock
in the Town Hall in Cheraw a meeting
will be held, at which speakers will
be heard, who have followed the
march of the weevil from the Rio
Grande and who have seen every experiment
worked to stop his onward
march. They will tell from experience
the best method of warfare in
the fight and we earnestly urge every
tor to be present.

INCOME RETURNS NOW AVAILABLE!
The following statement is issued
by Acting Collector of Internal Revenue
W. R. Bradley, the District of
South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina.
Forms 1040?a revised and simplified,
for filing individual returns of
income for the calendar year 1921 oi
$5,000 and less will be available Wednesday,
January 18, 1922, at the office
of Collector of Internal Revenue, Co
lumbia, S. C. A copy will be mailed
to taxpayers who last year filed a return,
but failure to receive the form
does not relieve a taxpayer of his
obligation to file a return on time, on
or before March 15, 1922. The form
has been reduced from six to four
pages, two of which are devoted to instructions
which should be carefully
read by the taxpayer before filling in
the blanks. A study of these instructions
will greatly lessen difflcultiei
heretofore encountered in correctly
making out the return.
Returns are required of every single
person and every married perso
nonliving with husband or wife, whose

dependent minor children equalled or
exceeded $2000, or if the combined
gross income of husband, wife and
dependent minor children equalled or
exceeded $fi,000, all such incomte must
be reported on a joint return or in
separate returns of husband and wife.
If single and the net income including
that of dependsut minors, if any,
equalled or exceeded $1,000, or if the
gross income equalled -or exceeded
$5,000, a return must bo' filed. A
minor, however, having a net income
of $1,000 or $2,000, according to marital
status or a gross income of $5,o6o
must file a return. The requirements
to file a return of gross income, regardless
of the amount of net income,
upon which the tax is assessed is a
new provision. ,
"Net income" is gross income less
certain deductions' which are explain- .
cd on the form.
Under each of the above condition*, j
a return must be filed even though no
tax is due. The exemptions are $1000
for single persons and married persons
not living with husband or wife,
$500 for married persons living with
husband or wife whose net income for
1921 was $5000 or less and $2000 for
such persons whose net income wa
more than $5000. The exemption

years of age or mentally or physically
defective" has been increased frui

of cotton was strongly enlorsed
in a resolution passed by the
