ARE OUB MERCHANTS AWAKE 1
The Board of Trade held an important
meeting Friday night principally
to hear Mr. Tiller, the County
Agent, on the government plan to
fight the Boll Weevil In S. C.
Among two hundred others, the
secretary of the Board of Trade mailed
to each of our fifty odd merchants
a notioe telling of this important
meeting ana urging tnezn to De mere
Out of the fifty odd invited only five
were present.
Next to the farmer the Boll Weevil
will affect the merchant possibly
more than anyone else and in Cheraw
all of our businesses are almost
entirely dependent on farming. Are
the merchants, who certainly are in
touch with the situation, going to
sit by and let George do it and reap
the benefit of any little good that may
be accomplished without their help
and advice.
This is surely every man's fight and
every single person can help by coming
out to these meetings and thereby
showing they are behind any plan
that will help the farmer win this
fight
' According to our notion it is up to
the business men in the towns to pro.
vide a market for the crops that must
to some extent, take the place of cotton
and in this the merchant can help
materially.
However, the Board of Trade meet,

members were present and Mr. Tiller's
talk was fine. He clearly put
before the meeting the work comtemnlated
and asked the help of the
Board in the undertaking of adopting
a Chesterfield jcounty program
tor the farmers to follow. Read the
account of the meeting elsewhere in
this issue.
