CHEBftW CHRONICLE |i" JOE LINDSAY, Editor ch j ~ qu Foreign Advertising Representative , , ! THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIA HON I de THE DANCE MONDAY NIGHT su yc We feel that, after forsaking an inviting bed and in the wee sma' hours ^ of the night, hieing ourself a Sabbath ^ day's journey down to the dance, over a newly made sidewalk, that we must make some comment. After every dance held here this summer we have ve heard talk of misbehavior on the part of both boys and girls so we decided to see for ourselves, but lo! they tell the rough ones didn't come, and we were cheated. What we did see was a very order- 01 ly, quiet dance. We had heard that so some of the dance steps were very be objectioanble. In one sense of the w: word and for one reason we agree je with our informer. It takes entirely so too murh energy to do them but aside wl from this we couldn't see an abject- le ionable feature about them. This ap- st plies to all the dance 6teps, because be they only dance the "Toddle" nowa- n? days and there was no change during m the hour we looked on. w In our palmy days we "looked in" n? on quite a few dances of different va- th rieties and we feel we are competent 01 to judge. Please accept our judge- fii ment that the dance Monday night in was very, very "tame." a - ta WHAT'S THE MATTER NOW? w pi Before the writer took over this ^ newspaper we heard various excuses n from our merchants as to why they w would not advertise. Some said the paper had no circulation and various other reasons were given. We ar? 'c now prepared to give any of them fc positive proof that the paper is read a and that we have a circulation in 18 keeping with any. paper run in this ei size town and if there are any other tl excuses we are prepared to meet them. w Xow what we would like to know is, 81 why some of our merchants do not n advertise? , , 6' One merchant told us he could not see the difference in his business t when he advertised. If it were possible for us to sell a little space in our B paper and th^next day crowd a man's store with customers we would not a have to ask anyone to advertise but b if this or any other merchant want y tn v.*. rnnvtnopd thai advertising navg we challenge them to allow us to advertise against them for thirty clays. We will use nothing but the truth but n we will promise they'll feel its effect b and we'll give a year's free advertis- a Gents Fui Many men know this sto wesve not juggled with their c< and pays us, too, to play fair. One of the memsrs of the league kindly loaned the riter an article bearing on this subct in which the author puts forth mie very forceful arguments as to hy we should not retain meaningss names for our streets. He says reet names should be used to keep fore the eyes of the public the imes of our great men and to com. emorate great events. For instance hen a man or woman reads the ime Washington on a street marker iey will immediately bring to mind ir first president, the man who was rst in war, first in peace and first i the hearts of his countrymen and boy or girl, being told that a cer. iin square was Manila Bay Square, ould ask why the name. This would . rompt the telling the story of how ewey met the Spanish fleet at Maila Bay and practically won the war ith Spain by destroying it. It seems to us that our streets have ?rv inanDroDriate names to sav the sast. We are thinking of First street >r instance. Wouldn't Last street be better name for it, and then there i Church street with all the church3 on Market street and the editor of lis paper living on High street. Yes. e are very sure that every one will gree that our streets should be reamed and we hope the Council will rant"- the request. he codfish lays a million eggs, While the helpful hen lays one; ut the codfish does not cackle To inform us what she's done. ,nd so we scorn the coltish coy, ut the helpful ben we prize; /hich indicates to .houghtful mini* That it pays to advertise.
