CLEAN IF WEEK?SEPT. 12th-19th c
1
The Civic League has named next c
--- c ? 10?K oe ploan
week beginning otpi. i<.iu ?
up week and is urging every citizen
in Cheraw to see that their yards and
lots are put in the very best order
possible.
We hope every one will heed this
request for the sake of the health as
well as the beauty of our town.
Of course every one will be on the
"look out" next week to see the places
that are not cleaned and we surely
hope there will not be a single home
in Cheraw whose premises will not
reflect the loyal and cooperative
spirit every town should have.
This request is directed to every
merchant in town as well as home
owners. For the past week or two
the Council has advertised an order
calling on our store keepers to cut
weeds and clean up in the rear of
their buildings and the report is, that
no attention was paid to the order.
Now the ladies, who have the interest
of the town at heart, are requesting
you to see that a thorough cleaning
is given to every piece of property
in your keeping.
Don't be a slacker; do your part
toward iinaking "Clean Up weeK a ^
success.

A new adaptation ot the parachute
has been experimented upon by the
army air service. This consists of
carrying the parachute in the rear
of the fuselage with certnin special
equipment. When accident makes it
necessary for the pilot to leave his
plane in midair he simply pulls a lever,
disconnecting himself and a section of
the rear fuselage from the rest of the
plane.

VOULD BE POWERFUL NATION
iut Separate Nationality for Ukraina
Does Not Seem to Suit tho
Qroat Powers.
The Ukrainians art by far the moot
lumerous of the races aspiring to islependence
through the disappearance
if the Romanoffs and Hapsburgs.
There are 35,000,000 Ukrainians, most
>f them in the six southern and southvestern
former Russian "governnents,"
or provinces, and in eastern
ialicla.
The Ukraine is larger than Gernany
and twice as large as France. It
iretches from the Carpathian mounaius
to the Black sea and the Cau asus.
It contains tl^e oil fields of
lallcia and the famous Donetx coal
ind iron region. Almost all the cereals,
-attle, sugar and salt exported from
he former Russian empire came from
he Ukraine.
If the Ukraine manages to survive
ind keep within its boundaries the
erritorles in which its race predomnates,
it will be the most populous
md the richest of the new states created
by the war, and next to Russia,
he largest country In Europe.
An independent Ukraine, however,
ioes not seem to fit in with the Interists
of the victors in the World war.
is these interests are conceived by
heir statesmen. Hence every possible
effort is being made to deny the
?xistence of a Ukrainian race. Durng
the last few years the most absurd
tnd unfounded statements about the
Ukrainians have been circulated and
lave gained credence.?Herbert Adams
.iibbons in the Century Magazine.
New Jersey seaside mothers, who
,iave been bothered in keeping tab od
their children, have adopted the niethxi
of embroidering their addresses on
the back of the bathing suits worn by
the youngsters. "I live at 37 South
Texas avenue," read a neatly embroidered
inscription across the shoulders
of suits worn by two young bathers
who strolled about the Chelsea
beach the other day. When they were
tired of the beach and breakers thej
turned their backs to the life guards
and inquired: "How do we get where
It sars t.i our backs?" The necessary
directions were given and they
reached home safdy.
