Early in the week weather reports
were slightly better, and dispatches
from abroad indicated unsatisfactory
trade conditions. The stock market
was* easier, and money higher. This,
together with other influences, had
a bearish effect on cotton and the
market lost a few points. On Turs.
day, the cotton market steadied and
advanced on reports of further deterioration,
and better conditions.
The cotton market continues quiet,
" but scarcely enough cotton is being
offered to supply the demand, and the
basis has hardened. It is a well
known fact that manv hovers who
have visited Eastern markets recent-1
ly have been compelled to ; return'
with only a small portion of the goods'
they expect to purchase. Manufactured
socks are depleted and will
have to be replenished immediately.
This should create a much better
demand for raw cotton.
The 1921 crop will prove to be sev.
eral million bales less than that of
1920; trade conditions are improving
slowly, and if the present crop is
not marketed too rapidly, no doubt
higher prices will prevail before the
new year. Every farmer and buyer
should hold a portion of his cotton,
even if he has to borrow money to'
do so. Very little can be lost in doing
'this,, and much can be gained,
not only from an advance in the market
but also from narrowing of price
differences between grades. Before
the war, price differences between
grades were usually l-8c to l-4c. On
account of the unusual demand for
high grades during and after the war,
differences widened to 2c to 5c per
pound between grades. However,
these differences have narrowed to
l-2c to lc, and will probably continue
to narrow front time, making the
grades below Middling worth more

j Clemson College, Aug. 25.?The
cotton boll weevil finds his hotel for
the winter in old stalks, weeds and
dead grass in the field. He will find
splendid winter-quarters in tinkepl
terraces, weedy ditch banks and
fences, in neglected orchards, in underbrush
along the woods and road,
sides, etc.
The weevil requires for successful
wintering a pla<fe with a given
amount of moisture failing in such
places where moisture is heavy.
Therefore the cover crop that is used
for preventing land washing and the
leaching of soil fertility, and for
maintaining soil texture is of the
^eatest value under weevil conditions,
because it acts as a cleansing
?pa whifh lippne down weeds and
winter food plants and destroys protective
coverings for the... weevil a:id
other destructive insects during the
winter.
It is time now for farmers to think
about these matters and Wot let this
work go until the last moment, advises
Prof. A. F. Conradi, entomologist
who says that we want to clean
up our farms this fall as we have
never done before. These wintering
places mentioned must not be permitted;
they must be removed or.
destroyed by one method or another.
