The sand hills of North Carolina ,
&
In the vicinity of Hamlet, Hoffman tr
and Aberdeen have leaped into prom- th
inence recently because of this year's
je
abundant yield of the peach crop and
prices being paid which make you
% SI
sit up and take notice when you Agin
ure out the proAt per acre. The re- al
port is that talk around the hotels w
at the above named places resembles tt
conversations heard in towi^s locat- ?'
ed in the oil Aelds where fabulous r<
, ti
prices are paid for lands and whe j
real estates changes hands some- d<
times twice in one day. Think of C
sand hill lands, the kind that has no
bottom to it, selling freely for $40 per
acre. Yet we understand this is the
case now in this peach growing sec- C(
tion. ChesterAeld county ought to be M
intensely interested in the develop- n
ment nf this industry as we certain- a
ly have acres of uncultivated sand h
hill lands that would grow as nne peaches
as could be found anywhere. We
understand from one who has investigated
that the following is about
the cost of getting an, orchard to the
bearing period exclusive of the price
? of the land based on a 100 acre orchard.
4
Clearing land 1st yeir
per acre ?!0.('0 t
Breaking, land and planting ,

Cost of tree per acre 15.00 "
Fertiliser per acre 9.00
Spraying per acre 10.00
Total cost first year per acre $50.00
Cost of spraying, plowing, etc
2nd year, per acre 25.00 ?
Cost of spraying, plowing etc.
3rd year, per acre 25.00 >Cost
of equipment, such as ?.
tractor, truck, sprays, etc. *
and buildings, per acre $100.00 *
Total cost of orchard to bearing
period, per acre $200.00
or an investment of $20,000 for
100 acre orchard.
Based on this year's crop the third
year'B yield would be a round 200
crates per acre at an average price
of $2.00 per crate or $400 per acre.
0( course the older the orchard the
bigger the yield. One orchard in N.
C., is 2C years old and still prodiit"ing
abundantly. The most distresspart
of this gold producing industry
is that it takes constaiiLy|y-&^|iBjMi^
painstaking work l^^Ionths in the
year. It also t^? a knowledge of Cj
the business.^Jlany failures in the
peach lnduafry are due to the lack ^
of the^"rto essentials which are as f
nececsary in this as in other busi- V
n'-sses.. However we can't live with
in a stone's throw of a "section that
has waked up to the possibilities of
the sand hills and not reap some
benefit from their experience so we
predict that in a few years Chesterfield
sand hills will come into their
own. Good roads-will be the first
step and then when its possible to
market this product the peach industry
will put us on the map in capital
. letters.

Paint Rock, Ala.?Mrs. C. M. Stegall,

interesting account of her rerd

I was Bick three years in bed,
suffering a great deal of pain, weak,
nervous, depressed, I was so weak,
I couldn't walk across the floor; Juit
had to lay and my little ones do the
wnrlr I was almost, dead. I tried
every thin?: I heard of, and a number of
doctors. Still I didn't get any relief.
I couldn't eat, and slept poorly. I
believe if I hadn't heard of and taken
Cardui I would have died. I bought
