GHffran CHBRAl J. N. 8TRIOKLIH, Let Pablltbad Etc Entered at Poetotflce, Che raw GHBSiV R fi THTTBS According to r?cent statistics living costs in the United States are dropping; It la claimed that they have decreased some four or five per cent, but. frankly, to the cltlaen it does no' thus appear. Judging by the prices we are paying prices are not lower. On the contrary, we note an actual rise In some lines and a stationary condition in most, while a few?a very few show a small decrease. We have kept close tab of our bouse hold expenses for the oast two months, and they are rising instead of falling. The quality we are using Is not better; nor is the quantity more?only the price total mounts. We should like to know what are the experiences of others. Are'their experiences similar to ours? Do they note any decrease? The question very naturally arises why is this condition? Why is it that prices do not drop, and drop considerably? We common people have always ccnsidered that with the return of the men from abroad; with the filling up of the depleted labor ranks, wages and commodities would drop, but even wages appear to retain their position. Fifty cents pere hour was tbeprice demanded for a handy man' work around the garden the other day, and none could be obtained less than 4G cents an hour. This for unskilled labor, that was bringing 15 wins previous io me war. wnat is It holding things up? Will the drop come and come with a flop? Is it a case of "someone putting muscilage on the wheels." or what is preventing a get-back to ordinary prices and ordinary conditions? A Detroit girl is missing from home and in describing her to the newspaper reporters the mother said she had a birthmark Just below the right knee. Keep an eye out for her. One war gardener declares that th< worms are eatir? his cabbage, beetles are riddling his cucumbers and moles are undermining his beans? bnt he's going to have 1 good or of radish seed. W R. It isn't often that we call a man'i attention to the fact that he owes i to himself and the community ii which he lives to have his name upof the subscription list of his home-towi paper. But yesterday we suggester It to one gentleman and he replied "It's getting 'round to where It's to< infernal hot to read." There Is a <man whose conversation then, is only interesting in cool wea ther. For it' Ts only when a mai reads that he can talk in an interest ing way. And there is also a mar who falls to "understand that the ol< world if still whirling along at a rap id rate In hot weather the stu^e a; In the cooler 'months, an<l that i he expects to keep up with it he wil have to read "summer news" just ?h< same as that dished out bv hfcm homi newspaper in the fall. But the fact of the matter ia thi home paper is a home institution, ant as such is entitled to support twelvi months in the year. It would be i fine community if we quit going t< church and kept our children out o Sunday school just because the housi of worship is not as comfortable ii mtmmor o a It ia In ? THE WIRES LEAD HOME. By August 1 all wires, telephor and telegraph, will have returned i their owners, and the doxology wi be sung by 100,000,000 people. The attempt of Government contr of public utilities has been a dism failure. Absolutely correct in theor it has fallen down completely in pra tice, and very naturally men are asl ' ing the question "why?" The answi is plain. W*W are not yet ready f< this step. As a people, we have n i yet arrived at that point where 01 t representatives are efficient or hone i enough ho handle the public prope , ty. As a war-time mAisure, possib . the taklnsr over of the wires nnri nth I public utilities was justified, but ne ; er was a case more conclusively pro , en than this one of the utter inabili of the Government to run prlvu enterprises. Absolute failure has been the rest ! Welcome home, oh wires. Now le have the railroads as soon as possibl ! A dollar In Cheraw is worth 1 ] cents, the same as everywhere els . but It will only buy about thirty cen i, worth of grub here. Wonder if it f the same way everywhere? 1 e We have also noticed that rubb b heels are getting to be almost ; common in this country as rubb s necks. J e Something has gone out of the 11 1 of a anan when he no longer has n long summer school vacation to lo( ' fdrward to. B A grass widow is generally one wl is looKing ror "green fields ai * pastures new." b p One of the hardest things we ha to fathom in looking at roim girde a in and around Cheraw Is to tell will j Is the vegetable and which is t weed. d ~ ^ It's too bad the Italian delega didn't take his wife with him to t peace conference. Then he'd ha Q had somebody in Paris who won have agreed with him. y ~ It's a pretty fast world, but we n tice that burglar-proof safes are st r being robbed while lire-proof buil ings burn up every day. o Remeimber, that even if you cai do anything else you can at least he things a little bit by keeping out a the other fellow's way. J The fact that there were 1,400 mi dri%lng salaries as a result of t peace conference comes pretty ne explaining why they were stringii it out. If any man in Cheraw feels unccv fortable during the next few wee but fails to have the usual dark-brov taste in his mouth he should be wi eonugh to keep his feelings strict to himself. di..~ 5 reeling mue r Liver Lazy?
