It had been raining for three days
without letup. Everyone at the hotel
was flared still', actually stiff
"Greut guns!" inelegantly piped Eulalie.

The crSHPe referred to was a forlorn.little
woman itt cheap black who
slipped Inly the hotel lobby '
Then mother fluttered over. "Jane,
run over to father and interrupt, him,"
he begged of me. "It's perfectly dis- (
graceful the way he neglects his daughters."
Poor father had been having a delightful
time during the whole three
blessed days of rain. He smoked and
smoked and smoked and talked war
and finance to the?well, really, the
Uinningest man 1 ever saw ! "Did you
ever see anyone so distinguished T"
gushed mother.
Just then the stranger looked about
and, after giving me a mere passing glance,
his eyes rested on the face of
the woman in black. The kindest ex- f
pression came into nis eyes?the way j"
one looks at helpless, pretty babies.

Leave it to our mother to follow up c
the slightest chance where her daughters
are concerned. She actually
pounced on the man! Father was

I'll confess that although Eulnlie and c
1 did our very prettiest, to say'nothing X
of mother's amiability, everyone watching
knew the man simply could not
keep ids eyes off that shrinking ligure {
in rusty black.
Ills name, we found, was Donald
later, and his stay at the mountain
resort was uncertain. His desire to
keep his eyes on the perfectly lovely
profile of the lit tit? creature in hluck
dampened even Eulalie's irrepressible
vivacity.
I'd been trained t ? be tlie tactful one
of our family, being tlie plainer of the
girls. So, remembering about it in
time, 1 gracefully approached the worn

Then for two hours everyone sat

When I could no longer bear the accusing
eyes of mother and Eulalie, 1
fled to my room.
I unfastened a string of pearls from
my throat, throw them on the dresser
and myself on a couch.

straight, dumb with terror! 1 wanted
to shriek, but could not. 1 saw my
string of pearls disappear, bead by
bead, over the side of the dresser,
through the opening of the curtain.
My dresser was close to the door leading
into the hall. It was fully live minutes
before I came to my senses. Then
I rushed downstairs, through Kululie's
room. I was, I confess, too seared to
leave through my door. I whispered
to mother about the necklace
"We'll go upstairs and look for It,'
replied mother, with simple confidence.
"You might he mistaken, you know."
I suggested darkly, "that funny little
thing in black?-no one knew lief.''
".she left the hotel bag and baggage
just before you came down," serenely
assured mother. "Iler eyes were still
red from weeping, poor thing."
"Where is the Slater man?" I wanted
to know
"lie leaned her his motor. She was
still nervous and crying."

room. Eulalie stood in the doorway

Iler eyes, dilated, were framed in a

about the house," wailed poor, dear

empty pocket honks, jewel cases and
1 handbags. -Sueh an uproar! Every
room apparently had been entered.
"To think," breathed Eulalie, "1
came lip stairs intending to go to the
little creature's room t<? make friends
with Iter for his sake and she?she had
been here before me."
"Who had been here?" demanded

For answer, Eulalie silently iiehl up
a small torn piece of rusty black goods,
an exact duplicate of the material the
beautiful small woman had worn for
throe ?lays. "It was hanging on thai
tin? nail between your door ami mine."
