'THE~T^t\VS"FAME. ?
There's many a sleepy neighborhood (
not all of them In the little towns
either.?that exist solely unto itself ,
and unthought-of by the great wide
outside. Its people never do anything
to merit attention; hence they never
get it, except when someone gets discouraged
and comits suicide, a fact
recorded over the country and promptly
forgotton.
The trouble with these communities
that their people never get together,
No matter how small a place may be,
cooperation can stir up enough projects
to keep the town humming and its
name in the papers, These places
have an advantage in the fact that such
things are rem be red longer. Your big
city Decoration day parade is forgotten
over night; not so your small town's
Home Coming or Fourth of July picnic.
Summer is coming with its holidays,
its reunions, its home-comings and its
big picnics. Let us &t together on
some "Bigger'n Ever" proposition and.
do it right away. It requires the htfp
and boost of everybody.
Cheraw can't depend on somebody '
else to toot our horn. If we want a 1
reputation, we have got to go out like
all the other "white hopes" and win <

agents.
When the citizens have .learned to
cooprate not occasionally but all the
time and on all occasions, alert always
for some plan, to make the countryside,
the county, .the state and occasionally
the nation talk about us, it will be a
good time .to talk about Cooperating
with the neighboring counties for the
still more advantageous spreading of
Let's do something new and altogether
original in Cheraw and, when the time
comes, let us cooperate "like a house
afire" with other, communities our
size and larger for the common welfare
of all of us.
Come on, everybody now; let's go out
and get a reputation!
An old time Fourth of July celebration
would be a good thing to start
off with! .
NOW LETS KEEP CLEAN.
So much is preached of clean up
In the spring and later forgotten that
it is timely now at the close of the
spring clean up-weew, of home street
community, to recognize the necessity
for continuous vigilance in cleanliness
and tidiness. For the sake of health,
for the sake of happiness, let's keep
clean.
It is not enough to isolate aud eliminate
contagious diseases; we must
ostracize untidiness. The home premises
are the concern of the individual,
but if the indivudal is not concerned
In keeping them clean, they become a
matter of public interest, being a
menace to health and happiness.
Streets and alleys are. the concern of
all, although the town officials are wont
to overlook their care which then falls
upon the citizens who do well to be
organized and prepared for community
tasks of this sort.
Tidiness and cleanliness of the
community depends upon the individual
citizen, but organized effort has
the power to mold public opinion and
private action. It is well, as a result,
to have a town Improvement
league, The presence of such a body
of community workers here in Cheraw
could not help but be felt and much
good would result.
Having cleaned up, let's keep clean.
Let's keep the backyard cleaned, the
front yard beautified, the interior of
the home attractive, the streets and
alleys free from litter and rubbish, the )
vacant lots tidy and the approaches 1
to the community pleasing for those
going into the country and for those I
coming from the farms.
In such a campaign, nothing will be
of great service than a well tended *
garden. Gardens take the place of i
weeds. Gardens aid to the attractive- <
ness and tidiness of the community i
and thereby are of vital Importance in
the pncniirnromonl t\f hoolth no ...oil t

of happiness. 1
Let's keep clean In Cheraw both by
Individual effort and by community o
organization; 'then we will have a
community to be justly proud of.

TOWN IMPROVEMENT,
Tbe state of South Carolina has many

iave tyfil n osmall part in making them
on the other hand, many

Where pver the public housekeeping
satfai# there is a remedy If only
he j dtate. In the public-spirited,
vomien'of this Civic League Cheraw has
lust 'a Bocity. We claim to be the"best
vhat am," but even then, with by helpng
thte women, we can be better.
Suppose we try a little harder now
:han. ever.
There are various lines of work
possible?the ./planting of trees, the
cleaning of streets, the encouragenent
of public improvements, paved
lighways and sidewalks, the beautifyng
of the public square and the like.
The results need be limited soley by the
imount of effort put forth, for the
general public of Cheraw is a home:own-loving
people merely awaiting
eadership.
Naturally, when such a movement
is started, everybody parcipates; is is
)nly the start which Is needed, only the
jeglnlng which Is hard. Local pride is
julckly aroused and there comes a
lesire, aroused from Inertia, to make
the community more attractive. If it
takes a little original effort, It is worth
svhile. Methods of procedure are only
limited by the initiative and energy of
the public.
WHY ADVERTISE?
It has only been a few days since
we heard a merchant say that it was
perfectly useless to advertise, because
there was no money in the country
and advertising for business was like
fishing in a tub with a plnhook and
expecting to catch a whale.
To prove to your own satisfaction
that he was wrong, go to the poetoflfice
or express office and see how much
merchandise is being shipped into this
town by the mail-order houses. And
they got the business by going after it
The mall order houses is a thorn in
the local merchant's side, and yet he
is a legitimate competor. The local
jnecqltfufct ?ePs
"heply as the mail order house, but the
mail order man "beats him to it" by
telling the people about his values.
Do you suppose Sears, Roebuck Co. of
Chicago, would have ever been heard
of in this country if they had never
advertised. Can you see how the
National Cloak and Suit Co., of New
York, could have ever sold Mrs So and
jo a coat suit last fall if they bad
never ad"evtis? i for her businesj?
If it dres not pay to advertis?, wry
