The wife of a surgeon in Haltlmore
was one afternoon giving a bridge
party, when, just before the guests began
to arrive, she found that she had
not a sufficient number of chairs. In
her desperation she bethought herself
of a near-by undertaker who might be
willing to let her have a few of the
needed pieces. She telephoned and
was horrified at the reply:
"Why, certainly, Mrs. Smith. We'll
let you have all you want at halfprice?the
doctor gives us so much
business."

Memory Failure.
A Russian doctor gives interesting
accounts of memory failure of some
of his patients. A literary man had
been troubled with absolute failure of
c#emory. He could remember exactly
anything he had done more than a
year ago, but occurrences of later date
he had entirely forgotten. When attacked
by the disease he was engaged
in writing a novel, which he had halffinished.
He remembered the first
half, but could not tell how he had
intended to finish it. He was at last .
unable to rememoer whether he had
dined.

BEAUTY IN THE FAR NORTH
Magnificent Displays of Color When !
the Arctic Sun Shines for a j
Brief Period.
Nature has provided wonderful dls-'
plays of color as an offset to the ex-;
treme desolation of the far north. A 1 J
traveler in Alaska describes in vivid j j
style one of the short-day appearances (
of the Arctic sun as follows: j
"First a greenish glow on the south- j
em horizon, brightening in*o lemon j
and then into clear primrose, invades j (
I the deep purple of the starry heavens, j
Then a beautiful circle of blush pink J t
above a circle of pure amethyst gradu- J y
ally stretches all around the edge of j {
the sky, slowly brightening while the f
stars lade out and the heavens change ! j
to blue.
"The dead white mirror of the snowtakes
every tint that the skies display
with a faint but exquisite radiance.
Then the sun's disk appears with a t
flood of yellow light, but with no ap- ^
preciable warmth, and for a little |
space his level rays shoot out and gild
the tree tops and the distant hills.
"The snow springs to life. Dead
white no longer, its dry, crystalline
particles glitter in myriads of diamond
facets with every color of the
| 1 j
prism. Then the Bun is gone, and
the lovely circle of rose pink over
amethyst again stretches round the
horizon, slowly fading until once more
the pale primrose glows In the south ^
against the purple sky with its silver
stars."

EXPERIMENTS IN INCUBATIQH
Results of Series of Tests M
Hatching Eggs by the -Pen^^^K&J
vania Station.
At the Pennsylvania station a series
of experiments in Incubation were con- ^
ducted from which the following con- ^
elusions were drawn:
Under natural conditions eggs not j,
promptly incubated are subject to daily
warming by contact with the hen's ^
body which appears to have an impor- _
tant influence on tho lifo and vigor of j
the embryo chick. ..
Warming for 60 minutes gives better ^
result than for 30 or 120.
Eggs held for incubation gave better ;
results when laid flat and turned dally.
No especial difference due to posi
tlon was noted in eggs held for less '
than 16 to 18 days. .
In both tests poorest results were L
secured with eggs placed on end and j
turned daily, as compared with eggs ^
laid flat, or placed on either end and
not turned.
Influence of age of eggs on hatchability
varied greatly, presumably due
to season or conditions of breeding m
pen. te
Washing eggs for hatching material-- 0j
ly reduced hatchability. jy
Eggs placed on end in incubator for
first three days of incubation suffered
no i?erceptible injury.
Eggs turned twice daily generally ^
gave better results than those turned 'U
once daily. ni
