Tuesday. ' Four hundred and twelve
names have been placed on the roll.
The first tobacco sale in Cheraw
was pulled off in the Oheraw Warehouse
last Saturday. Several thousand
pounds of the weed was dieposed
of to the entire satisfaction of
the growers.

"A row out near Four Mile Branch
Sunday night resulted in one negr?
woman being shot in the arm, one
negro man being pretty badly wounded
by a pistol shop and another
being badly slashed with a knife. All
parties have been bound over to court.

Open Cotton.
The first open bolls of cotton of the
season was brought to The Chronicle
office Monday morning by Mr. P. B.
Huntley. There were four bolls on
the limb brought in and Mr. Hfcintley i
reports that he will start his pickers j
out during the coming week.

Mr. Earnest Watson's Remains Placed
At Rest in Cheraw Cemetery.

Watson were held Monday, Rev. G. T.
Harman conducting them.
For several years Mr. Watson has
made his home in Cheraw, Jaein*
associated with his brother, Mr. J. A.
Watson, in the conduct of his bottling
plant. By his quiet gentlemanly
bearing he had made many friends
and the news of his death came to
them as a slhock barbed with pain
and sorrow.
A few weeks ago he was taken to
Florence to have his leg treated and
no one thought for a moment that his
condition was such that death was
imminent.
Mr, Watson wtas only 27 years of,
age. He came to Cheraw 5 years ago |
from Kershaw, his native home.
Those from a distance who attended
tihe funeral were Mr. 0. H. wftson,
his father, and Messers. Herbert, and
Jessie Watson, his brothers, and Miss
Sallie Watson, his sister, of Kershaw,
and Mr. W. S. Watson, a brother, of
Lancaster.
The pallbearers were Messrs. O. B. .
Funderburk, Burrues Finlayson, J. E.
Wilson, H. E. Ballard, G. M. Watere ,
and S. I. Cato.

For what does he stand notoriously?
For what does he stand nororiously?
First, for economy. Do you know that
congress in the last two years has
spent $352,000,000.00 on creeks and
rivers and harbors? This has not
helped the people of the Fifth District
one penny. South Carolina's share
of that money according to population
would be $48,000,000.00. If they had
put that on our post roads instead of ~
in creeks and harbors and rivers every ^
man in South Carolina would have a (
good road at hand. During that term |
our whole State government has cost <j
only $20,000, 000.00. We ould have | (
about two and a half times as much
for our roads as it takes to run the
whole State government, and Instead
of its being used to benefit our roads
it has been dumped into creeks and
rivers and harbors, and almost none of
it has been seen in South Carolina.
They have just passed a bill through
the house carrying $80,000,000.00 and
the senate will add to it Stevenson
says, cut down "that steal," as Ben
Tillman calls it and build roads to the
farmers' doors.
What does the farmer say about
this? Give Stevenson a chance, and jj
he will do his best, not only to "put 5
the Fifth district on the map," but to (j
put the farmers of the fifth district j |
on Che map also.
