Independent of New York. It can not
j shake off the idea that everybody in
j the South is in a conspiracy to op-1
j press the colored race, and it is for'
ever indulging in passionate remon'
strances on the subject. Observe wha*
! it said about the treatment of negroes
by the present administration in
l Washington:
! "But now there is a change. Clerks
in the executive department are now
| separated by color. The negroes work
in separate rooms, or behind a parti|
tion. and must not eat in the same
lunch rooms or wash in the same
I toilet rooms. There had been no troui
ble these forty years, not even under
! Democratic adminstrations, but now
the colored clerks, men and women.

is that here in South Carolina
white men are trying to spread the
notion that the Democratic administration
is tending to encourage social
equality between the races; a few are
saying it openly and others are tell
ing it in a low voice to ignorant people
who do not read and will have
no opportunity to hear it contradicted.
