Tomorrow, April lo, is Good Friday.
Every school boy and girl knows
there is a "Good Friday," but few
of them know why it is so called.
They probably would say it is "potato
planting day," since they have
learned that there ciders, and especially
their grand-parents usually
believe this the one best day of the
year for such work.
Good Friday really is r. commemoration
of the crucifixion of Jesus, observed*
on the las: Friday before
Easter of each year. It has been
celebrated since an early period, and,
while the practice had no religious
significance, hot cross-buns always
were a part of the meals 011 this day.

Easter, like all movable festivals,
is one that annually causes a grea'
deal of discussion as to the exact
date it will fall upon. and. while the
controversy might easily lie settled,
since the date is regulated by the
moon, most of us are willing to wait
until the yearly almanacs and calendars
are printed in both of which the
date usually is established.

Easter: It is a festival commemorating
the resurree'ion of Christ. There
. was a long dispute in the Christian
church as to the proper time to ob
eerve _ Easier, hut the council at
Nice settled the controversy in 325
when it fixed the date for the first
Sunday after the full moon on or after
March 21 of each year. If the full
moon happens on a Sunday, then
Easter is the Sundav following.
Easter this year comes on April 12.
There are some lovely people in this
great world of ours that remind us of
fragrant flowers. Whenever they
draw near, we are glad, but know not
why. They may not possess physical
beauty, or riches or marvelous in
telligence, but embodiment 01 peace.
They inspire us tor they are full of inspiration
of the highest order. These
people are likely a quiet lake beside
which grow tall and beautiful plants,
which, when reflected in the water,
makes a pleasant picture. There is no
jarring, nor a ripple on the mirrorlike
water. The colors of earth and
sky harmonize exquisitely. Ilirds sing
a soft lullaby into their ears. The
world with its din is only a sweet
memory.
Look around you at almost any
place in the town and you will see the
need of doing something to make the
town clean and look better. A little
effort and a little working together
and we will accomplish great things
towaru matting- mis a ciean town.
As an indication of the interest
being taken in school matters in
Chesterfield county, we call attention
to the election held last week in
Shilok school district on the question
of issuing bonds in the sum of $2,500
for the purpose of erecting a school
building. At this election only one
vote was cast against the proposition.
A little more than a year ago an
election was held in this disterict on
the same question and the proposi
tion was almost unanimously voted
down.
The weather man's prediction this
morning is enough to give one the
shivers. He says that we will have
freezing weather tonight and that a
cold wave is coming at us right from
the icy fields of Alaska, and that
there will be big frosts as far south
as Florida.

Juarez, April P.?Fragmentary dispatches
from Torreon indicate that a
large Federal army is advancing from
Sanpedro to recapture Torreon. Several
sharp skirmishes have been reported.
Washington, April S.?An ice chillI
cd wave direct from the frozen fields
of Alaska is bearing down on Southern
and Eastern States tonight, bringing
what promises to he recordbreaking
fall in temperature. Weather
bureau experts predicted furs and
overcoats would be exceedingly popular
in Easter parades Sunday.
From the lower Mississipi Valley
States east to the Atlantic and as
far north as the Ohio valley the temperature
records report tonight
ranged from 20 to ".0 degrees. At
i'ensacola, Fla., the thermometer registered
50 degrees and was expected
to drop to the 40 point by morning.
By tomorrow night, the reports said,
the northern portion of Florida would
be in the grip of heavy frosts.
The course of the cold wave is due
north from the Southern Atlantic
States and by tomorrow the Eastern
States are expected to feel a decided
difference in temperature.
