Dreher, superintendent of the city schools, said recently that the new Logan school on Elmwood Avenue was openeed with open ai rexercises, followed by an inspection by the public, The building equipped cost something over $71,000,Mrs. Louisa D. Logan, widow of the late Charles Logan, whose bequest made the school possible was present. Charleston.?The Hon. F. C. Cochrane, Canadian minister of railroads and canals, after resting a week at Summerville, a resort village, 22 miles from Charleston, left recently for Augusta and Atlanta, in each of which towns he and his party will spend one day. From Atlanta the party will proceed direct to Ottawa, Canada, the minister's official residence. Chester.?The New Bendella or King's hotel at Laurens has been leased by Henry C. Rohr, whose lease on the Carolina Inn, the largest hostelry in Chester, expires tn first of next month. Mr. Rohr will open the hotel in Laurens January 1, while T. L. Eberhardt. owner of the Carolina Inn will begin its operation under his management on that date. Columbia.?Each of the 44 demonstration agents of the United States department of agriculture and of Clemson College will prepare an agricultural exhibit in his county for the next state fair, according to resolutions adopted here recently. The passage of the resolution was urged before the state fair's executive committee by R. I. It is a serious inconvenience to the cities and manufacturing plants dependent upon the plant for power. Columbia.?Gold and platinum tc the value of $500 were stolen from the dental offices of Drs. The reports say that a professional gang of thieves who have been operating in Charlotte and other cities lately, were in Columbia and that the two doctors had been warned to keep their offices securely locked but did not heed the warning in putting away stock. The doors were prized open. Columbia.?A resolution passed by the Railroad Commission recently provides for separate compartments on Interurban trains for whites and ne'groes. This does not affect cars that are excluscively used for one or the other race. Six months time is given to comply with the order. Rock Hill.?Owing to a continued inability to secure enough women to operate the machines it ha6 been de cided to move the Carhartt overall fao tory from Rock Hill to Atlanta. This factory is a branch of the big one at Detrot, Mich., and was established here two years ago for the purpose oi supplying the Southern trade. It is a big concern, with a weekly payroll oi about $1,500, employing women almost exclusively. It tfras first started in a small way, but a little later over $30,000 was spent in the erection of a modern factory building equipped with the mest machinery and provided with all modern conveniences for the workers.
