Next Monday afternoon, at 2.30
there vill be fifty automobiles from
Benncttsville, occupied with hooafalp
for the Marlboro County Fair. Tbe
cars will be decorated, and when they
arrive in Cheraw speeches will be
made by Col. Tom C. Hamer, president
of tne Mariooro uouniy rair -association,
Mayor L. J. Breeden, Messrs. J.
K. Owens, J. J. Evans, Tom M. Morgan,
D. D. McColl, Jr.,, and others.

The annual Fall Flower show will
be held on next Tuesday, October 28,
In the Civic League hall, under the'
auspices of the Daughters of the Confederacy.
The show promises to be
one of the best ever held in Cheraw.

Some Flower History Continued from
Last Week.
In 1822 or 23 Dr. Thos. Powe, who
was then in Philadelphia at college,
sent from there to his mother, Mrs. I
Esther Powa a paper of seed of a
wonderful, ornamental plant that had
just been introduced from South
America. It was called "Love Apple."
It was an annual of most luxurious
crnwth. covered with a soft,
bright-red fruit, which made It very

poisonous, but was edible. Since then ,
we have planted it in our vegetable
garden, and it i? one of ouri standard
vegetables?the Tomatoe.
In 1872 Mrs. John Powe brought
the first "flancy" Canna here. We
had cannas,?tall, dark-leaved, rank
growing plants with broad leaves and
insignificant red flowers. It was
planted for thfe ornamental, tropical
Rooking plants in those days?the
flowers amounted to nothing?and it
was called "Indian Shot" on acfcount
of the seed being like shot. Mrs.
Powe brought from Marlboro the yellow
canna?the "new canna" it was
called for a long time. To Mrs Powe
we^lso owe the sweet fern, now so
poplar; as Well as the Cosmos, liveliest
ot all fall flowery The seed of

sister of Wnke Forest N. C., in 1885
or 1886. The yellow cosmos?"Klondike,"
is very new with us. To Mrs.
J. S. Bishop we owe this variety. She
brought the seed from Florida about
3 years ago. Spireas we have always
had, several varieties; but we
know not who brought them here,
except the beautiful dwarf spirea1,
that begins to bloom in January and
is the gracefullest, daintiest of them
all. Mrs. Dr. Wilson planted the
first one on her place about 1885. Mrs.
L. D. Harrall has a beautiful specimen
of this spirea in her front yard.
To Mrs. Vereen we owe the introduction
of the Calladium (Elephant's
ear) as well as the Calla Lilly.
Mrs. Susie Mclver started the white
Pinks that bloom in May, from a paper
of seed planted about 1878. Some
one in Spartanburg sent Mrs. Caston
the first'yellow oxalis bulbs?one of
our most indispensible winter blooming
plants. Up to 1893 we thought
