About lour o'clock Tuesday morning
the alarm of fire was given and
it was found that Mr. \V. I.. Gillespie's
residence 011 North Green street was
burning.
The lire had made such headway
before discovery that it was impossible
to save anything, .Mr. Gillespie,
himself' escaping only slightly clothed.
In just eleven minutes alter the
alarm was turned in the Cheraw file
laddies were on the ground wilh their
apparatus and in a very short time
were throwing water 011 the Chapman
house right near the burning
building. The opportune arrival of
the lire laddies was all that saved
the Chapman house, as the top was
in ilames before water was turned on.
Had there been 110 tire lighting apparatus
in town there is no telling
what the lire loss would have amounted
to. With the wind blowing as it
was, had the Chapman house burned,
the fire would have had free course
to a long line of dwelling houses, but
the file laddies were 011 hand although
the door to the "apparatus"
house had to he broken down he. I
fore the machines could he gotten
out.
.Mrs. Gillespie and the children left
last Saturday for a visit in North
Carolina. Mr. Gillespie was the only
one at home. Practically nothing
was saved from the burning building.
All of Mr. Gillespie's surveying
outlit and data was destroyed. This
is an irreparable loss and is the
greatest loss to him because of the
fact that it will he impossible of replacement.
All of ihi* silverware was destroyed
lniring the day this silverware was
recovered from the ruins.united down
to an unrecognizable mass: also an
amount of silver coin that was in a
trunk was recovered. This was al- so
