HOMICIDE IN CHEBAW MONDAY
L. Trobeangh Shot and Instantly Killed
by B. L. Gardner. .Beth Men
CitUens of Cheraw.
L. Trobeaugh was shot Monday af
ternoon about 7.20 o'clock and instantly
killed by B. L. Gardner. The
killing happened at a gate in the line
fence, the two men being neighbors
and section foremen in the employ
of the Seaboard Air Line railway.
It seems from the information obtainable
that there had been bad blood
between these two men for several
months, arising from a dispute over
a gate in a line fence. A few days ago
some of the children of Mr. Trobeaugh
left the gate open and Mr. Gardner's
cow did considerable damage to Mr.
Trobeaugh's garden, only to renew
the old feud. Monday afternoon Mr.
Trobeaugh, after reaching home from
his work, went to the gat< with a
hammer to nail up the gate and was
6een by Mr. Gardner, who went out
with his pistol in his hand and the i
shooting immediately followed. Mr.
Trobeaugh naa nis pisioi m ma punnet
as is the custom of railroad section
foremen. It is said that Mr. Trobeaugh
had threatened Gardner's life
during the day.
Sheriff Douglass and Coroner Atkinson
arrived on the scene late that
night and the inquest was held. The
jury rendered the usual verdict that
Trobeaugh came to his death from a
qunshot wound in the hands of B. L.
Gardner.
Both men were married and had^

families and were respected citizens.
Mr. Trobeaugh was about 50 yean
old and Mr. Gardner was about 27.
Gardner surrendered to Chief of Police
Pegues Immediately after the killing
and was lodged In Jail at Chesterfield
that night by Sheriff Douglass.
