Greensboro, N. C., is the first city to
make use of the recall provision of
the commission charter. The newmsi
commission elected a chief of polce
in secret and the citizens will recall
the election of the commission because
the law forbid the election of officers
in secret. We like the commission
government better than we thought
we did. A person does not realize
its possibilities until be sees them put
to use in away that makes him envious.

At the board of trade meeting the
other night, speaking of the condition
of the new "Ferry Lane" or river road
just across the river in Marlboro coun.ty,
Warden Smith made the remark
that if some work was not done 011
this road pretty soon it would soon
be in as bad condition as some of Cheraw's
streets. Let us hope, for the
good of those who have to use that
'road that "some work" will be done
jon it very speedily.
I The board of trade at its meeting
last week "took notice" of the condition
of the streets of the town and
adopted a resolution, at the repuest
of Warden J. D. Smith, to the effect
that "the town council be requested
to use the split log d'ags AFTER
RAINS, and not during dry weather
as has been done heretofore^ Try!
this suggestion, gentlemen of the
council, and lets have the best streets
of any town in the State.
Some of the enterprising citizens
of Cheraw are anxious to see Cheraw
maintain a free public library. Pub-,
lie libraries are all right in their timeand
place, but a lot of new enterpris- j
[es for Cheraw just now would be bet-'
ter than a free publiclibrary. Whatj
this town needs is more employment I
for men. This is not the time to talk;
up a public library for this town. It!
is likely, of course, that The Chron-1
icle will be called a "knocker" fori

The ladles of the Civic League are
doing good work in the cleaning up
of the filth and trash in the town, and
while they are pushing this work,
why can't all good citizens join in and
clean up the town morally, by driving
out all evil dens; drive out the
blind tigers, drive out the gambling
dens and every other den that should
not exist in a civilized community.
Another "dream" dissipated;?no
electric power from Elewett's Falls
for Cheraw. * Col. C. E. Johnson, of
Raleigh, N. C., president cf the company,
announces that of the 50,000 J
electric horse power to be generated,
all but about 10,000 horse power will
be used in the mills and other industries
of Rockingham?the other 10,000
horse power will be carried to
Raleigh. I
Governor Blease is opposed to one
man holding two offices, has denounced
the practice, in fact has requested
the attorney general to bring action
against some of the parties, among
them Senator Tillman, and yet in the
face of this fact, now comes the governor
and appoints a professor of the
South Carolina university as state geologist.
There are two nice salaries
attached in this case, as well as two
offices?$1,900 as professor in the university,
and $1,500 as state geologist.
' The Chronicle is nearing its 16th
birthday and is th eonly paper published
in Che-aw. It has stood for
Cheraw all these years and will continue
to do so to the best of its ability.
