lay in the completion of their work
and also the reason why a certain amount
of money was retained in their Be
hands. It is useless to discus the legality
of the acts of the commission *y
with the Governor, since the Governor,
in his own estimation, knows
more more law than any other lawyer J?
in the State,
I will say, however, that I do not
consider it any dishonor to be remov- .
ed from office by a man of the calibre jj'
and character of our present Gover- t
nor.
My work as a member of the commission
is an open book, that may be
read by all meu, and I leave it to the
honest citizens of South Carolina, who
have no sympathy with thieves and
grafters, to say whether or not I have
done my duty.
MILL TO BE CONTESTED
Proceedings Have Been Instituted to
Set Aside Will of the Late Dr. Will
larason?Fraud Is Charged.
There have been instituted a suit
entitled "A. G. Tolar, in behalf of
himself and pthers heirs-nt-law of
J. H. Williamson, decease, late of Rich
mond county, vs. J. W. Llde, et al.
This case wil attract widespread
attention. Its purpose Is to set aside
the last will and testiment of the late Dr.
John H. Williamson. 1
It i6 alleged that Dr. Willamson was |
not legally capable of making a \alid .
will on account of "dissipation, sickness
and old age." It is further alleged
that in making the will Dr.. Williamson
was the victim of "fraud and
undue influence." The matter is sensational
in the extreme.
> The plaintiff Tolar sought to have a
receiver appointed to take the estate
in charge and a restaining order to
Issue frcra Judge O. H. Allen on Mar7th
at Wadesboro.
It came on for hearing at Laurinburg
on Thursday, March 16th, and
was dismissed and the order vacated
because of the fact that no summonds
had been served at the time
of the issuance of the restraiuing
order.
The case will finally come down to
trial of its merits and will afford
Richniadd county a trial of note.

by Gov. Blease. Jacobs Is 72 years

David Jacobs and Mary Johnson
?re convicted of murder in ChesterId
county in 1891. They were shargwlth
killing the husband of the
jman by poisin. The jury returned
vlrdict of guilty of murder in the
st degree and Judger Fraser senneed
them to hang.
The attorney for Jacobs and the
Jinan, secured a commutation of seance
to life imprisonment from B. R.
llman, who was then governor of the
ate. No one knew of the commutation
:cept Gov, Tillman, the Sheriff of
lesterfleld county and the attorney,
le prisoners were led to the scaffold,
ist before the trap was sprung, the
ivate secretary to the governor prented
the papers.
Both of thre prisoners were sent to
ie peniteitlary. The woman died
veral years ago.
The case attracted much attention
the time and the charge was made
at the attorney for Jacobs and the
oman, told the two prisoners to propt
the^r Innocence to the ?nd, and
ey would never hang.
