IIL ? The Crime of Tree
Butchery.
(Copjrrlfht, mo. by American Prees Association.]
rli utterly Impossible for the human
mind to form even an opinion
of the destruction of property by
the "tree butcher." In many places
fee real estate values are 50 per cent
leas than what they might have been
tolth good trees. As a result of tbo
hacking and slashing the trees are not
ft ring a fifth of their natural life.
An elm or maple should stand Intact
for 100 years. Barring the violence
af tornadoes and such agencies, apple
trees should be in a good state of
bearing at 300 years, the pear at 300

and the oak at 1,000. But while the
tree butcher la at large this same premature
death will be continued.
For ten years I have been before tbe
public as a writer and lecturer, and
though the press Is doing a noble work
get 1 see hut one hope and that Is to
get the children to comprehend "tree
life." I will send some reading rnat1

their children Informed. But here Is
a phase which the parent can begin
' with. If you have not a little pocket
microscope get one. Take different
. ticks and cut off with a sharp knife,
then 1st the child look through the
" cops," and the eye will be delighted
to see the little cells opened up and
appearing much like a honeycomb.
These little cells communicate with
one another, and when the water falls
on them they are prepared to receive
the spores of the various fungi. The
fungi are a vegetable growth, aud their
mycelium or what answers to roots,
penetrate the cell tissues, break them
down and produce what we call "rot"
or "decay." Millions of trees in forms
and stages of disease can be found
rapidly approaching death, as seen in
No. 0. This is an apple tree, only
about forty years old.
Or look at illustration No. 6, an apple
tree about the same age. Id botb
these cases the trouble arose from
some one catting off branches and

condition exists for the grubs, larva*
and ants and all kinds of "crawllnj

a place. And can we blame them'
No; we would do the same if we wer<
ants or bugs. It Is we who are tc
blame for wounding our friends, the
trees, and opening up their nobU
bodies to decay aud disease. See how
the branch to the right in Illustratior
No. 6 has been eaten away by Insects
This is one of a whole orchard <>f ap
pie trees Id Sandusky, O.. that went t(
pieces In a sleet storm about fifteer
months ago?an orchard of fine varle
ties of apples. There Is an element ol
sadness aBout this, hut the part thai
appeals to most people Is the "dollai
lde." From a business standpoint
That a folly to allow Ignorant men t<
reduce real estate values of property
because they know enough to ruu i
taw or wield an ax!
This is not. as a rule, mallclouslx
done. It Is often accomplished bj
good meaning people. Fifteen year.'
ago I knew a good, honest Dutcbmar
Who "trimmed" an apple orchard foi
the "firewood." A year ago it cost $2,00t
to repair the damage, and certalnii
the irees are rnatly Inferior to wba
they wonld hare been bad they noi
had their noble boles and branchei
hollowed by disease.
I call special attention to tbls phast
of the subject and urge all parents U
ffet the children Interested In struc
tsral botany.
President Taft didn't strike Glveadam
Gulch on bis western trip, but we
are not blaming klm any. While we
all love him, the boys were prepared
to scare him out of a year's growth.
The more we reverence a man the
more we want to shoot all around bia
feet.
Forests of Chile.

Tis Indicates the action of Foley
Kidney Pills as S. Parsons, UaMIe
Creek. Mich., illustrates: "I have been
afflicted with a severe ens of Kidney
and bladder trouble for which I found
no relief until I tried l'oleys Kidney
Pills. These cured me entirely of all
my kidney ills. I was troubled with
backaches and severe shooting pains
with annoying urinary irregularities.
The steady use of Foley Kidney Pills
rid me entiely of all my former troubles.
They hare my highest recommendation!.
