Chesterfield County raises the finest
sweet potatoes in the world and
in large quantities. Pity there isn't
some way to save them from rotting
so that they might be shipped. A potato
cannery might be a good scheme.
Chesterfleid county should have a
fair of its own before another year
rolls round. There are many reasons
why; principally too?the county can ,
have a first-class fair, and the people
would spent their money at home.
The many defalcations of these late
days are caused more by the high
way of living than by the high price
of living. Lots of people are living
beyond their means, and lots of others
are trying to get rich quick without '
working.

The Chronicle devotes considerable
of its space this week to the election
news from the various States in which
elections were held this week. We
believe every one will be interested
in the election news, especially our
rural readers who do not have access
to the daily papers.
The Civic League ought to be aided
in every way in their efforts to
make Cheraw a city beautiful. We 1
hare all wanted this sort of enterprise
in the community for a long ,
time but the men folks have teen too
busy building up the town to pay any
attention to tho "beauty" side of the
p obbm. But now the ladi s have
taken up the work and we hope that
the men will spare the time to help
them accomplish their purpose.

Tha Flower Show of the Civic
League held this week was very successful.
From a standpoint of attendance,
however, it could have been
improved upon. It should have been
better attended by the men folks.
The next thing on the program of the
Civic League is the Bazaar to be held

and we hope it wil be patronized by

all our people as it deserves to be.
There will be a total eclipse of the
moon next Wednesday about 7 p. m.
Did you visit the fair in Columbia
last week? We went over on Friday
but didn't see much fair. In fact,
the Fair was a mighty small affair,
, but the crowd was there all right.
It really seems that Barnum was
right when he said "the people love
to be fooled"?especially South Carolinians.
Figured out the Fair was
about as follows: 5 per cent, agricultrual,
15 pr cent. Clemson, 10 per
cent Winthrope, 30 per cent, ho se
races, and 40 per cent. "Midway" attractions.
And speaking of the "Midway
attractions, the Fair people certainly
ought to cut out the questionable
and immoral shows that were
allowed on the grounds this year. 1
