After a business meeting a most enjoyable literary programme followed, two unusually interesting papers being read. Mrs. E. F. Mulloy and Miss Eli.se Duvall adding greatly to the programme by their musical selections. A delightful social hour followed, during which the guests adjourned to tha library; whera a tempting mouu was served in courses, each dainty table being fragrant with yellow jasimiue. The Civic League hold its reg ular moutniy meeting on ma ay afternooo, au<l a number of important matters were discussed, aud plans were made to further beautify the town green. The subject of special interest before the league ju.-t at present is the annual "flowor show," whiuh is to be held in the league hall in the early spring. It was unauimou.-dy decided at this mooiiug to h"ld a bazaar in the fall, which will be the biggest affair of the kind held duriug the year. ? Town Council Orders Lid Closed Down Tight. Tha regular monthly meeting of town council was not hsld on ! Monday last for s?oma reason, but 'yesterday morning a call meeting was held with tin Mayor aud j Wardens Smith, Mull<>y and ' Huntley present. The only business transacted was the awarding of the contract to clean the ditches of the town and t-ho regulation of the slob : machines in the town, j The contract to clean the ditches was awarded to Ned Edwards j whoso bid of 890 was tin lowest. ; After discussion it was orderjed that all slot machines be .'closed up on Sunday. The motion was resisted by Attorneys of Bennettsville After hear ing arguments Judge Watts decoded that an injunction could not lie, therefore he refused to make the lemDerary injunction permanent. It is the same old thing, a few little'shows (?) and many near-gambling attractions. We have made a close investigation and can't for the life of us see where the town can get any good out of such aggregations, but vc suppose we must be wrong or the town would not allow them to come in.
