The question has been asked, 1
when did the term, "Solid 1
South," first come into exis- -
tence? Tho following answer
from the Omaha Bee explains:
"The solid south was
never the solid south before the
civil war. In fact, its first appearance
in that role was during
tho Garfield-Hancock race of
1H80. That campaign was also
characterized by a new high
mark in the vote of third parties.
James B. Weaver, of Iowa, on
the greenbaeker ticket, polling
300,000 votes. That record held
until 1802, when the populist
party, with Weaver at its head,
polled over a million votes."
